10.5: Leave certain newsgroup files out of Time Machine Internet
For those of you who frequently download files from newsgroups, you know that you download a ton of *.rar and *.par files, but you only really care about the final resulting file. If Time Machine happens to run while you are downloading all the individual pieces, they will be retained by Time Machine, even after you think you have deleted them. This will eat up precious space on your backup drive on files you know you won't ever really want to recover.

To get around this, I created a Newsgroup Downloads folder within my regular Downloads folder. I then pointed my newsgroup clients: iGrabNews (not working with Leopard yet) and Unison to put all downloaded *.rar and *.par files into this folder. Finally, I went into the Time Machine Options in System Preferences and added the Newsgroup Downloads folder to the list of folders not to back up.

Good tip - I went ahead and excluded the entire Downloads folder, as there are lots of temporary files that will otherwise accumulate. That's a common enough scenario that I almost think Apple should have made it a special option, just to call attention to it.

I know this doesn't work for everybody, but I went ahead and told Time Machine not to backup any system files. So if my system crashes, I can't restore the whole computer, but I can install OS X from the DVD and then restore individual documents manually. I have limited backup space and my documents are most important to me, so I thought this was a good way to do it.

yeah, in addition to excluding my Downloads folder, which basically acts as a staging area before I delete or move files to their permanent locations, I excluded a subfolder of my main Video folder. In the Video sub-folder, I temporarily store DVD Rips or torrents that I don't need backing up because i'll usually delete them within a day or two after I watch or encode them.

If you use Unison, you can also exclude Unison's caches out of your backups. Unison downloads the headers and other information for each newsgroup you open, and this can take up unneeded space.
Just exclude ~/Library/Application Support/Unison/your.news.provider

Thanks Clunk Clunk. I noticed my backups were huge, but it took me a while to figure out that it was because I'd been using Unison lately.

Forgive me for stating the obvious but it took me a few days to figure out that TM is also backing up my play-once-and-delete podcasts. So I've also excluded the podcast folder in iTunes.

What about ~/Library cache files? Can I exclude them as well or am I being paranoid about disk space?
