10.5: Remove the stripes from list view mode Desktop
Here's a tip I discovered; I was holding off to see if it would show up in the queue in the first few days, but with over 400 new submissions, it's not there yet ... so I thought I'd go ahead and toss it out for those who dislike the alternating-row stripes in 10.5 (I actually like them, but I know that feeling isn't universal).

If you'd prefer a plain white background for list view mode, as in 10.4, open Terminal and enter these two commands (without the $):
$ defaults write com.apple.finder FXListViewStripes -bool FALSE
$ killall Finder
Presto, no more stripes in list view. To get them back, repeat the above, but change FALSE to TRUE, and then kill the Finder again.

Can you add them to Column View?

I tried with:

defaults write com.apple.finder FXColumnViewStripes -bool TRUE

but no dice

I'd like to know if they can be added into email easily. Under Mail 2 I was able to hack the interface (following a guide posted on hawkwings) to have the messages of my inbox show up on alternate blue/white lines. This was most useful. I'll try something similar for Mail 3, but if there was an easy way to do it in terminal that would be better.

Hooray! While I don't mind the stripes in iTunes, I find them aggravatingly distracting in List View. Now, I need a way to name my Spaces ;)

if button returned of (display dialog "Show Stripes in List View?" buttons {"Cancel", "Yes", "No"}) is "no" then
do shell script "defaults write com.apple.finder FXListViewStripes -bool FALSE; killall Finder"
else
do shell script "defaults write com.apple.finder FXListViewStripes -bool TRUE; killall Finder"
end if

Thank You! In iTunes the stripes are a little more subtle. In the Finder, they were totally distracting. I wish there was a way to do more subtle stripes in the Finder. Anyone?

Well Path Finder from Cocoatech (http://cocoatech.com/) has the ability to select the color (any color) for alternating stripes in list view, so you can make them as subtle as you like. Mind you this requires you be using Path Finder for viewing your folders, it's not just modifying the look of Finder but replacing it. It's just one of the many useful features in Path Finder, though, so for some it's worth it.

Well this didn't work in Snow Leopard and I also tried a few apps that offer this as a system tweak but no luck. Any one got a fix?

This tip is fantastic and makes much much happier. Does anyone have a solution for the Save/Save As dialogue box as well?
