10.5: See and use some extra built-in Smart Folders System 10.5
As you've probably seen, there are a number of pre-defined searches available in the SEARCH FOR section of the sidebar. There are, however, a number of other searches that didn't quite make the cut. In the Finder, navigate to this directory:

/System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/CannedSearches

In that directory, you'll find searches for All Applications, All Music, and All Presentations, amongst others.

[robg adds: If you'd like to use any of these canned searches in your SEARCH FOR sidebar, here's how I did it. First, copy the cannedSearch file to the desktop, then control-click on that copy and choose Show Package Contents from the pop-up menu. In the first folder that opens, you'll see a search.savedSearch file. Rename this to whatever you like, and drag it into the sidebar. Of course, for that much work, you could've easily rewritten the canned searches found in this folder.]

Any way to remove the section from the sidebar entirely? I would love the extra space, as I never use smart folders.

You can't remove the section altogether. However, you can remove all the default smart folders. Just go to the Finder Preferences pane and click "Sidebar." This brings up a list where you can disable or enable many of the default sidebar items. At the very end of the list are all the smart folders. Uncheck all of them, and they're gone!

Or control (right) click on the smart folder and choose "remove from sidebar".

I'd like to disable the set searches also. I can turn them off in the sidebar, but the searches are still done and so if they are re-enabled will show their results. I want to do away with them entirely.

When I drag the .cannedSearch files to my Side Bar I can not put them under "Search For". I can only added them under "Places" (where they work fine, but not where I want them).

Anyone know how to get around this?

I know I found the canned searches day one of my Leopard life... and found that the canned searches are stored your finders plist with some hex-foo you could add this or any canned search one you figure it it... it looks like it uses both unix and old toolkit strings to the canned search folders along with some odd ball text.

As of yet I haven't had enough time to crake the code. Hope that helps someone out.

I was able to drag a smart folder under the search for pane, so you could take a look at the canned search attributes (click the gear option) and re-write to a new smart folder

Once you copy the folder to the desktop, just double click on it. It will open a Finder window. From the File menu, select "Add to Sidebar" (command-T). To rename it, control-click (right-click) on it and select Rename.

Option to add a Smart Folder to the sidebar isn't working for me. Other than the canned Smart Folders, neither checking the "Add to Sidebar" in the save dialog, nor dragging it into the sidebar is working. What gives?
