10.5: Complete Mail addresses by Address Book nickname Apps
In Leopard's Mail, when typing in the recipient of an email message, Leopard will search the Address Book and show matching addresses by the person's Nickname field. This is particularly useful when you have contacts with names in foreign character sets (like Japanese), and keep a nickname in roman characters, but of general utility nonetheless.

For example, suppose the person's name is "小野 洋子" and the nickname is set to Yoko. By typing only yoko in the To: field of a message, Mail will autocomplete the email address.

[robg adds: This tip makes this one irrelevant, thankfully. I had created a number of one-user groups that have now been replaced by nicknames. You may have to use the Card » Add Field menu item to add Nickname if you've not used it before.]

No, it didn't. At least, it certainly doesn't work on 10.4.10 -- I tested it just this morning, and the nickname field is resoundingly ignored by Mail.

All I can say is I've been using the nickname field for addressing people for a long time and I never used Leopard before GM. So yes, it did work in Tiger for me. Maybe its due to some plugins I had and a side effect or what not, but the end result is it worked.

For names like this (japanese, for example), I add the phonetic first/phonetic last fields, rather than use the nickname field.

I can also confirm that this DOES NOT work in Tiger. This is an awesome fix and very important to me. For example, I use the nickname block to put in amateur radio callsigns. Sometimes I want to write to someone using their callsign. This makes it very convenient. On Tiger this would only work if their callsign was in their email address.
