10.5: Charge iPods and iPhones while sleeping Other Hardware
I noticed that after installing 10.5, my iPod and iPhone both charge when the computer is asleep. I have tested this on a few machines now, and none of them that had Tiger would do this, including my machine before I installed 10.5.

[robg adds: In some limited testing on my machines, this definitely seems to work -- and is a great reason to upgrade to 10.5, all by itself. I lamented the loss of charge-while-sleeping when the FireWire - USB switch was made, but now, it seems we have it back!]

any change in sleep patterns?

Nice.

Does this change anything for waking up sleeping Macs? Like, what happens if you try to SSH into a sleeping Leopard machine?

Not a Leopard feature

On my MacBook Pro with LED backlight, my external USB fan has always worked while the computer is asleep, even when I'm in Tiger. If it'll power a fan, it'll power an iPod.

Yes it is a Leopard feature. Tiger would charge some things over USB but not iPods or iPhones. Try it yourself.

Changed functionality of USB when Mac is asleep?

Does this change also mean that USB peripherals can be plugged/unplugged from a sleeping machine and not cause it to wake?

Sweet! Now I can use my Mac Book Pro as an extended battery on those long car trips without having to drive around with the screen open.

hmmm, I think this only works when a portable is plugged into AC. That's how the FW charging used to be.

Drat. I always forget to carry my car charger and end up returning with a laptop in the front seat with the screen dimmed all the way.

My Quicksilver freezes when I put it to sleep with the iPod plugged in...always has. Must be an Intel thing.

Anyone try this with a G5? I've got more iPods than chargers, this might persuade me to upgrade.
I've read that while Leopard is snappier than Tiger on Intel it may be a little slower on the PPC. Anyone have personal experience with this on a G5 ?

Uh oh, I guess this means now that non-compliant portable external USB enclosures won't sleep now when the Powerbook/Macbook goes to sleep. The whole reason this occurred with firewire enclosures was to allow iPod charging, and my non-compliant FW drives never slept.

Won't the drive spin-down on sleep?

hello apple.
i think it's a severe bug that there is no system preferences pane to control powering ports during sleep!
has anyone posted this already at apple?
or found out which plist to edit?
(i honestly always believed it was hard-wired behavior).

not charging on a PB 12"
Authored by: ThreeBKK on Nov 11, '07 06:14:10PM

I am using a PowerBook 12" (most recent version) and an iPod Mini 2nd gen. My iPod still does not charge via USB when the Leopard is asleep.

I am not crazy, and my G5 iMac has ALWAYS recharged anything plugged into it while it was in Sleep, as long as the device was plugged in before sleeping. I have always charged my iPods, and sometimes my phone and my Palm, overnight with my iMac in Sleep. With Panther and with Tiger. This is not something new to Leopard.

My G5 won't charge anything other than FireWire while sleeping. Really. If I want the iPods to charge, then the Mac has to be awake. Same thing on the Mac Pro until Leopard.
