10.5: Spaces and multiple windows from the same app System 10.5
One of the nice things about Spaces is that when you click on an app in the dock, you automatically go to the correct space for that app. I just discovered if you have multiple windows from the same app spread out over several spaces, each click of that program's dock icon will switch you, in turn, to each space that contains one of its windows.

This could be pretty handy for Sys Admins who may be monitoring several processes in different terminals from different machines in each space. Each click of the Terminal icon in the dock will take you to the next "machine." One click access to different spaces, rather than ctrl-# (or arrow), or using the mouse to select a space.

Spaces and multiple windows from the same app

I would like to see the option of turning this off, in particular for Terminals this is pretty annoying. Virtue desktop had this option.

I work around it using applescript to open a new terminal window without switching the desktop:

But still, this only works for the terminal. A generic solution would be way better.

This drives me insane, because Cmd-tabbing to various applications will basically randomly transition me to a window, and thereby force a Spaces transition to the Space wherein the window lies... which prevents being able to switch to an application which is not on the Space in order to make a new window there (browser, terminal, IM, etc.). It also forces a Space transition even when the application has a window in the Space I'm in!

I've been resorting to the pathetic work-around to map such applications to all spaces, which increases clutter and defeats the purpose of having multiple Spaces. In short, this is a departure from Desktop Manager, etc., behavior that is not appreciated.

I'm SO looking forward to a hint to turn off this annoying auto-switching. It enforces an app-to-space mapping, which doesn't fit the way I work at all - I tend to use a task-to-space abstraction, which usually requires the same app on multiple spaces. Erm - just like I used to be able to work with VirtueDesktop! Just a few additional configuration options in Spaces would make it vastly more usable for me.

I searched for hours to turn of this auto-switching. But until now I couldn't find anything. The best option would be a key command which prevents the auto-switching as it is in Virtue Desktops

I agree w/ the other posters that this drives me insane. The only workaround that I have found so far is to use option+tab instead of cmd-tab. Of course the problem with that is I haven't retrained my fingers to do that so off to another space I go more times than not.

Good hint but...

I found this hint useful, but whats driving me nuts about spaces is that I want Entourage to open in space 3. But I frequently need to open a mail message and move it to space 1 to use its info in a browser page. Then I need to open a new Task from that mail message, it flips me back to space 3 and opens the new task window there, which I then need to move to space 1 where I'm doing my work. Thats all fine and dandy, but 9 times out of 10 when it flips me back to space 3 to open the task window, it ALSO moves the open mail message from space 1 back to space 3. Grr! Leave stuff where I put it!
