How to use Address Book distribution lists Apps
Go to Edit » Edit Distribution List in the Address Book. A dialog box appears that lets you choose how people within a group can be contacted. For email, for example, you can decide, for any person with more than one email address, which email address should be used. You can also switch between entire groups of labels, such as always to use the Work address or always use the Home address. You can do the same thing with phone or address lists.

The list name in the Address Book is available in Mail as a distribution list. Begin typing the distribution name, and you can choose it from the list of addresses. In addition, if you select the distribution list in the To: field of an email, you can expand the list to explicitly list the email addresses in the To: field.

[robg adds: This was submitted as a 10.5 tip, but it exists in 10.4, too (and perhaps earlier). I'd never noticed the menu item, though, and judging by the feedback from the queue reviewers, many others may have missed it, too.]

Interesting. But why aren't the cool features really publicized?

I ran across this some time ago and was frustrated by the obscurity of the menu option. I'm really happy its there - I just wish it were a little more obvious how to get to it. :)

Nice to see it here, so that when others run into the problem, they'll hopefully be able to find this solution quickly.

How to use Address Book distribution lists
Authored by: MadridJune on Dec 09, '07 04:15:05PM

I have several contacts in my address book with two addresses (homes in two countries). I have selected my group, in this case "xmas" for address labels, then gone to "edit distribution list". The contacts in question are grayed out and I have highlighted the address I wish to use. However when I go to print and labels both address are still there. As I am in the UK my paper size is A4 but I can't see that this would make any difference. Am I missing something? I am using a MacBook with Tiger 10.4.11 and address book 4.0.6. Thanks for any help.

how do I manage the order in which the names in a GROUP display in the email? For example, my mac puts my contacts within the "group" in a random order in the email (to or cc: fields). I would like them to be displayed by alphabetical order in the email. I know that in the address book itself I can arrange them in that order, but in the actual email when I select the group, they show up in some random order. Frustrating!
