10.5: Include additional data when using data detectors System 10.5
Data detectors in Leopard are cool. In Mail, for instance, you simply hover over a piece of data, and an arrow appears allowing further action (if the system recognizes the data). Hover over an address, and you can add that address to your Address Book.

What is not obvious is that if you also highlight some other text in the email, and then hover over the address data, the address will get added to the appropriate fields, and the highlighted text will get added to the Notes field. Very cool!

It's an interesting feature. I particularly like the 'Large Type' contextual menu item for phone numbers - also works in Address Book. But I see more use for this feature, for instance in popping up text while recording with Snapz Pro ... a shame it is only available for phone numbers at the mo.

Actually... just tried it and it works for anything you have in a phone number field in Address Book, so this is possible :). Except that it disappears on cmd-tab. Hmmm.

Data Detectors do not seem to work properly for non-English locales. I wonder if they are supposed to? (Address format, for example, are different in different countries. Some put street number after street name, placement of zip code differs, and so on.)

Microformats

I'm not using Mail, so I don't know if data detectors detect microformats (Safari unfortunately is not aware of them). If they did, all kinds of non-standard contact details and event information could be embedded reliably (in HTML mail and pages by microformat-aware agents).
