10.5: Access advanced SMB printer setup options Printers
The first thing I tried at work, after installing Leopard today, was to add a printer, which is a Canon PCL. Usually in Tiger, I connected to it via SMB in our local windows server, like this:
smb://login:password@name _of_server/name_of_printer
But with Leopard, I just couldn't add any shared SMB printer. No matter what I tried, only Bonjour, IP and AppleTalk printers were available to install, but not my usual Canon PCL.

Maybe you remember in Tiger: when we needed to add another printer in the Advanced tab, we held down the Option key while pressing Add, and the next screen would pop up the "Print to Windows via SMB" option. But no such trick in Leopard, it seemed.

Well, to get the Advanced tab choice, I had to customize the Add Printer toolbar: there you can add a handy Advanced button. Press that, and there you'll find the Tiger functionality hiding!

[robg adds: To state the obvious, to reach this area, you first open the Print & Fax System Preferenes panel, then click the plus sign at the lower left corner of the window.]

I'm trying to follow your directions, but after I click the + symbol, and the window where I can select the type of printer I want to add, there is no provision that I can see either in the menu or in the window itself to Customize the Tool Bar

Right-click on a blank spot in the Toolbar and select Customize Toolbar ...

First of all, thanks so much metiure for this awesome post! I couldn't believe after upgrading to Leopard (10.5.1) that Apple would remove the advanced option from the Print & Fax preferences...and sure enough they didn't. =)

Here's how I got to the Advanced tab to show up on toolbar mwayne:

1. As metiure said: "To reach this area, you first open the Print & Fax System Preferenes panel, then click the plus sign at the lower left corner of the window."

2. Then, here comes the Apple simplicity. Just point the cursor on the toolbar (next to any old icon) > right click/ ctrl-click > Customize Toolbar

3. Drag the Advanced icon to the toolbar and you're all set!

Hope this helps and the instructions were clear.

Also, before I tried using the Advanced tab, I tried adding the printer in CUPS by logging onto http://localhost:631 as lawrencedudley suggested. However, for some reason after I am taken to the CUPS page, I cannot find the "Add printer" link anywhere on the home screen, or any of the others screens.... I'm at least glad I got my printer working properly one way!

You could also use CUPS (the behind the scenes software that system preferences manipulates.
To do so, open Safari, then go to http://localhost:631
From there, hit add printer, and follow the choices from there.
That's how I got my (Apparently Windows only!!!) Minolta 2200DL to work on Mac :D

I tried this earlier today, but couldn't get it to work. Many of the fields just stayed greyed out. However, in Tiger I'd been using URLs of the following format:

smb://domain\username:password@domain/server/printername

Apparently 10.5 doesn't like this. I used the URL format in this article and it works like a champ!

I've tried the Advanced button and CUPS, but since I upgraded to Leopard, I can't get my USR5461 to work with the attached USB printer. It uses IPP (HTTP) printing. I've restarted everything and done the usual contortions to try to get it back, but it seems that CUPS in Leopard isn't working right with IPP (HTTP). It worked with Tiger, but now does nothing but give the message "Connected to [IP]..."
