So which do you prefer -- i.e. which will you be using, courtesy of this hint -- when you make the move to 10.5?

I thought it might be interesting to see where the readers' opinions fall on the new 2D and 3D docks in OS X 10.5 -- hence our newest poll. I've also created a full-size comparison shot so you can easily see the differences between the two. I set the dock to its largest size on my machine, then switched the dock style and took the two shots. Trimmed to just fit the height and width, the pixel dimensions of the 3D dock are 1217x105, while the 2D version comes in at 1165x97.

Rob,

That's almost a new poll -- I'm more interested in which dock style you prefer to look at, even if you actually use it because you like to use a side dock.

That's me. I like the look of the 3D dock, even though I have the dock on the side anchored to the bottom.

I guess Apple thought that since having the dock at the bottom is pointless, let's make it really pointless by making it 3-D.

I agree with the first commenter. On my MacBook (and previously my Titanium Powerbook) I always have put the dock on the (right hand) side. I greatly prefer it that way. If that means 2D dock so be it.

since I'm a side-docker, it'll be old school for me

I'm a side-of-the-screen person, too. Documents are tall and my screen is wide, so I have width to spare.

I've never understood why the default placement of the Dock is on the bottom. All Macs and 99% of monitors feature greater horizontal resolution than vertical and since documents and web browsers benefit from greater pixel height, it seems natural to place the Dock on the side. There's also a historical context because NeXTStep put its icons on the right side.

Please add one other option "transparent dock". Though I really dislike the new dock, the "2d-ish" option looks to have a unique border edge with rounded corners in addition to the silly white lights. I have used the great Transparent Dock application since it came out and it always gets peoples attention. As for the running application image, there is not perfect style. If you have a dark background, the current method a black triangle is lost and if you have a bright background, then the new white light will be lost as well.

I wrote a little freeware utility to make things easy for the user to switch between the two appearances: It's called 2DOrNot2D.

I can't see what applications are running when using the "3D" dock especially when I have a colored background image.

Well, I'll stick out as the only new-dock-liker and bottom-screen-docker.

Does it annoy anyone else that the postmark on the mail icon goes off the edge of the stamp? To me it looks odd.
Stamp Canceling 101
In this age of e-mail, apparently people have forgotten how paper mail works. All postmarks are supposed to be half-off the stamp. That's the proof that the stamp was used on that envelope, and not steamed off another and reused. |
