Download spam from Gmail via POP Internet
When using Gmail with an email client via POP, spam messages are never downloaded, and remain on the server until they are removed, atask that is done automatically. Sometimes, usefull emails are labeled as spam, and of course, trashed with the rest of spam. If you don't want to enter the web periodically to check your email, then the solution is to download the spam and check it in your client application.

Enter the Gmail filters, and define a new one:
  • In the contains words box, type is:spam, then click Continue. Click OK on the next dialog.
  • Select the option "Omit received (Archive)" -- sorry, I don't know the exact label in English, but it is the first one in Spanish.
  • Save the new filter.
From now on, your spam will be downloaded and processed by your email client. This has been tested with Mail.app sucessfully.

Gmail is currently rolling out IMAP support. I strongly suggest IMAP when possible, you will get all the benefits of Gmail right in your email application (e.g. Mail.app).

Glad you chimed in, since I just swtiched from POP to IMAP for my gmail account in Mail.app.

My one issue, however, is that the spam is now showing up in the IMAP archve at the bottom of my mailbox list, and I can't figure out how to get SpamSieve to deal with it.. Any chance you (or anyone else) can give me any clues?

Thanks,
John

SO glad this came up. I'm going right to GMail to try out IMAP with Mail.

I turned off every additional spam-checking since Gmail does a perfect job for me.
Maybe you want to try to import your address book into Gmail, this should improve the filtering results. It does for me, I am getting ~25'000 Spammails a Month and don't ever check the spam folder - noone has ever complained that I lost his/her email.

They're still rolling out IMAP. I have it enabled on one of my really old Gmail accounts, but not on my current one. Rumor has it they should be finished within the week (according to their help).

Note that the Gmail IMAP feature is only available if GMail is set to use "English (US)". It doesn't matter what language your client is using, but the Gmail setting must be set to English.

This hint only works the first time you setup the filter; after that, it lets your spam sit in the Spam folder and does not send it through to Mail.app or any other client I've tested.
