I was testing a script for resizing windows, and was thinking that I would like to test it for something other than Script Editor. So I brought another app with more windows to the foreground, and Command-clicked on Script Editor's Run button, which I left visible in the background. (I use Command-drag on inactive windows all the time). The script ran with the other app as frontmost.
Apple talks about Command-dragging inactive windows, but doesn't mention more uses of the Command key as trigger for interacting with inactive windows. I was able to select text and click buttons in several apps without leaving frontmost app (although it is inconsistent -- e.g. I could sort messages in Mail, but not click them). I'm sure there are hints about it here, I thought that this use might help AppleScript developers.
[robg adds: We've discussed background actions in a few prior hints, but I couldn't find any mention of clicking buttons in background windows.]
