10.5: See 512x512 icons of Mac hardware and more System 10.5
Leopard now includes hi-res (512x512) icons for every Mac system it runs on. These icons are automatically set to your Computer icon, and other Macs running Leopard will show up as what they are in the network pane of your shiny new sidebar. These icons are, of course, transparent, so you can save them as PNGs and use them anywhere you want.

The path is /System » Library » CoreServices » CoreTypes.bundle » Contents » Resources. Enjoy!

[robg adds: The huge icons are truly stunning, and this folder contains much more than just Mac hardware icons. You'll also find 512x512 versions of many other icons, including system folders, Airport Extreme, the dotMac logo, and a number of interesting Toolbar...icns files.

The other spot I've noticed 512x512 icons is in the Finder, which is also found in /System » Library » Core Services. Control-click on Finder and choose Show Package Contents, and then navigate into Contents » Resources. Remember that you can drag and drop any of these folders onto Preview to see browse through all of the images at once. As an example, I've published a shot of the Xserve icon with this hint. Click the small icon to see the high-quality full-size 512x512 version -- they really are amazingly well done.]

512x512 pixels * 4 bytes per pixel (RGBA) = 1 megabyte.

Each icon takes 1 megabyte of RAM! My graphics card can hold 250 icons, yay!

Please, can someone confirm me if icons created with FastIcns enabling 256x256 and 512x512 sizes do actually work in Leopard?
thanks in advance!

It does indeed - I've just dragged a load of PNG files with alpha channel and I now have lovely 512x512 icons!

Ok, I want to mention that if you take a peek at public.generic-pc.icns (the icon for a shared PC, I'm guessing?) it shows an old beige box monitor with the blue screen of death. Definitely gave me a laugh :)

If anyone's interested, feel free to visit my Leopard Icon Web Gallery. I basically attempted to gather every 512x512 icon (up to 125) that is featured in Leopard and recent Apple software. Enjoy, and feel free to pass around the link.

I was under the impression that all windows would support larger icon sizes, but after the upgrade to 10.5 this morning the largest allowed size in the finder is still 128x128 am I missing something shouldn't I be able to set a larger icon size now with 10.5?

Thanks

I am at a loss as well. The largest I get is 128x128, must be doing something wrong as well.

Mac OS X 10.5 icons larger than iPhone screen
Authored by: joshuawait on Oct 26, '07 05:47:37PM

One icon in Mac OS X 10.5 at maximum size (512 x 512) is larger than the 320 x 480 screen of my iPhone. Whoa!

In fact, it's bigger than the entire screen of the original Macintosh (512 × 342). (Or, for a color analogy, a Mac Classic.)

Coverview view (stretched large) is a great way to flip through these icons in the new Finder.

"These icons are automatically set to your Computer icon"

I upgraded to Leopard this morning and my Computer icon is still the generic hard drive. I want it to be my beautiful 20" iMac. What happened? How can I change it?

Had exactly the same question. As copy/pasting the icons in the "Get Info" window didn't help (maybe I was doing something wrong - ie the Windows way :) I did some search and found a very simple command-line solution. Basically, you have to replace the ".VolumeIcon.icns" file located in the root folder. In my case this did the trick:
cp /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/com.apple.macbook-black.icns /.VolumeIcon.icns

For what it's worth, it seems that these icons were designed by Alexander MacLean, founder and icon designer over at widgetwidget.com as he was recently snagged by Apple to design icons and interface elements.

He's known as the author of Magnum Opus, a gigantic collection of Apple hardware icons, among other icon collections, and he's also a regular at iconfactory.com.

Sadly, there are no G4 Cube icons despite there being several G4 tower icons. Right now, my poor Cube shows a G4 tower icon! How can I find an appropriate Cube icon and then use that icon?

I have a G4 Quicksilver and couldn't get a custom icon to show up on my boot drive after upgrading to Leopard. After finding this blog entry: http://digitalpardoe.co.uk/blog/show/100, I was able to successfully change to my proper icon file!

The commands were as follows:

sudo cp -f /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/com.apple.powermac-g4-quicksilver.icns /.VolumeIcon.icns

sudo SetFile -a C /

killall Finder

You can also see 512x512px icons of both the iPhone and iPod touch. Don't why they're there, since they're not used by any application, but they are.
