Type accented characters on iPhone 1.1.1 iOS devices
I discovered that it is possible to type email, text messages, and enter text in most western languages. Simply tap and hold the button for the letter that most closely resembles the one you'd like to type. While holding the key down, an additional menu will appear where you can select the desired letter or accent.

For instance, to get an , simply tap and hold E and select desired letter with accent from pop-up menu.

[robg adds: This feature was added with the iPhone 1.1.1 update, but as of now, it's not yet documented in the iPhone's user manual (which hasn't been updated for 1.1.1), nor anywhere that I can find on the iPhone support pages or even in the what's new video.]

This also works on the iPod Touch with version 1.1.1.

From day 1 the iPod touch came with keyboards for English, French, German, Japanese, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish, Polish, and Portuguese, plus dictionaries for predictive typing for English, UK English, French, and German. What's strange is that the iPhone update only added a tiny part of this.

This tip also applies to the exclamation mark and question mark (when needing to write the Spanish).

I tried this and while the pop-up menu appears, when I hit the letter with the desired accent an unaccented letter appears in the text. Help help. Cheers

Thank you so much for posting this information. It made my day. I could not have figured this out on my own. Even my iPad displays Portuguese characters, even though it still does not support Portuguese.
