I've posted an illustrated tutorial for implementing NetBoot here.

Mac OS X includes a "NetBoot" feature, whereby you can have any Mac boot from the system on any other Mac on your network. This is not an easy thing to set up, and requires installing software, setting up the root account on the host Mac, creating NetBoot share folders, fiddling with NetInfo Manager and much more.

Tutorial for Implementing NetBoot in OS X 10.4
I was excited to read the linked article, but each micro-step of the process requires a full page load. I understand that sites generate revenue via advertisements, but there comes a point when the amount-of-information-provided vs number-of-page-loads becomes unacceptable and condescending. It is not possible to load the printable version of the article without registering with the site, so I see no method of gleaning the knowledge contained within the article in a less obnoxious fashion other than to skip to the author's list of references on the final page, which is what I intend to do.

It links to this URL: http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-Your-Regular-Mac-a-NetBoot-Server!/?ALLSTEPS

This is an excellent hint; as Kirk mentions, it's a good weekend project for those who want to do it "just because" they can. It's always neat when people discover how to implement Mac OS X Server functionality with the standard version. |
