Add Address Book support to Thunderbird 2 Apps
There have been past hints about this, but things have changed, so it's time for an update. OS X Address Book integration will be built in to the next release of Thunderbird, expected in 2008, and there is a patched version of the current Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 release with this feature now available.

See this post on the official Mozilla forums for the solution for today's Thunderbird. In summary, download the Thunderbird DMG that's linked in the first post there, launch it, and make some relatively easy configuration changes to add Address Book support.

To make the configuration changes, you need to open the Config Editor -- open Thunderbird' Preferences, click Advanced, then on the General tab, click the Config Editor button. Control click on the list of values and select New, and add three keys:
  • ldap_2.servers.osx.description (string) with a value of OS X
  • ldap_2.servers.osx.dirType (integer) with a value of 3
  • ldap_2.servers.osx.uri (string) with a value of moz-abOSXdirectory:///
See the linked post for the full details. Make the changes and restart Thunderbird, and you should have Address Book support.

[robg adds: I haven't tested this one.]

I have been using this update for a little over a month now. It does work perfectly well. There is only one minor glitch. The first time you try to send email, you will get a warning message about the address. You can discard the warning. Everything will work fine until the next time you re-start Thunderbird. The glitch only appears once every time Thunderbird is re-started.

I can't seem to get this working. I downloaded and installed the build and made the edits to the config file. Anything else that need to be done to get this feature working?

Thanks.

You should be aware that this is *read-only* support for the address book. You can't save contacts from Tbird to the system address book and Tbird still keeps its own separate address book. Still, it's somewhat better than nothing...

Wish there was an easy way to import Mail into Thunderbird and using iCal along with Address Book. Until then, Thunderbird is a lot of hassles to make it work.

I tried every hints out there but nothing did it.

I still find it funny that there was address book support for mutt way before there was address book support for T-bird. You would think it would have been the other way around.

Can it read from the Previous Recipients database?

or, perhaps, gpg and enigmail interfere with its operation?

Can't seem to get this working. Downloaded and installed the special build, made the changes to the config file. Is there anything I need to do to get this working?
