Hack to run iMovie 7.1 on G4s Apps
iMovie 7.1 (the latest update to the version of iMovie in iLife '08) will only run on G5 Macs or later. Or so it seems. There's a way to hack it to work on G4s as well. Simply add a patch to the program's contents, as explained here.

This hint works great! I've been using this hack since the new iMovie was released. And, when Apple updates iMovie, they are always quick to update the hack too (less than a day for the 7.1 update). iMovie runs great on my iBook G4 (1.42 GHz, 1.5 GB RAM), I don't understand why Apple would cripple iMovie and not iWeb because iWeb is slower than a dog and iMovie isn't. If you want to use iMovie on your unsupported G4 system, definately bookmark that site, I did.

I did this yesterday, It took me longer than it should have as the hint says using hexedit look for : 7C 08 02 A6 in the two lines

12B63C:
12B71C:

But I could not find them.
What I did find was:
0012B630:
0012B710:

at a guess that this was the actual lines meant I did the change on them. It worked.

You're in the right spot. The reason it doesn't make sense to you is because you probably don't understand hex.

It works like this... At line 0012B630, the first column/digit is 0012B630. The next would be 0012B631, and the one after that 0012B632, etc. So the numbers are counting up as you go.

Hex decimal is a bit different than the regular numbers you're used to. Instead of digits from 0 to 9, they go from 0 to F. Just like this:

0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,A,B,C,D,E,F which is equivalent to
0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15

So to find 0012B63C you scroll down to 0012B630 and then count across from 0 to 12.

Hopefully that makes sense. I know it can be a bit confusing at first when dealing with numbers other than base 10 (our normal counting system).

Can't get it to work on my Aluminum 12" Powerbook. Must be some other parameters that the script is looking for.

Intead of HexEditor, HexFiend might be a better option, since it is quite more gentle on memory no matter the size of the file it opens. And it is free too.

I managed to install iMovie on my G4 17inch (1Ghz), and software update provided me an upgrade to 7.1.
What doesn't work however is to get it to work.
I tried both routes : directly editing the imovie executable with hexeditor, or just replacing it by the downloadable executable on the site.
It still gives me the message that it only runs on a G5 or better.

This hack sounds fantastic, but I'm completely unable to figure it out. I'm familiar with Linux and DOS os's like Windows, but new to Mac OSX.

The installation program is on the install DVD. My Mac won't allow me to scan the DVD, and I can't figure out where it's mounted when I use the Terminal. If I try to copy the install program by dragging it to the desktop, the entire contents of the DVD start to copy over. Is that what I need to do to get at the program?

...and what is the source code for this program called? Can it be edited using vi? ...or will I need to download or purchase a binary editor. Next, what parameters must be used to compile it?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help get me going. BTW, I installed iLife (sans the new iMovie) a few weeks ago. Should I uninstall all of it and start over?

I decided to copy the DVD to my desktop for editing. Now I've got a file called "iLife '08.mpkg". I assumed is was a compressed file, like a zip or tar, but my unzip program (stuffit expander) says the file is actually a directory. (?!)

Please help!

I used Pacifist to access the iMove file then I upgraded to 7.1. I found the data in question and changed it. It didn't work on my 17" G4. I downloaded the shortcut file and replaced the one in iMovie. That didn't work either.

Seems to be identical to the problem I encountered.
From what I've seen up till now, it seems to be working on iBooks, but not on the Titanium laptops !?

It worked on my G4 12"" powerbook.
But I started with a 7.1 file, which I had on my G5.
I did not need to do an update, that maybe the problem.

Hi guys !!! It seems i'm not the only one struggling with that iMovie 7.1 subject !!! I tried so far the only option available to get over it but it doesn't work... indeed, it looks like it works (the iMovie launch properly) but suddenly fails and quit... I then have that message asking me if I want to restart, quit or send a report. Can't go more further here... i'm wondering how come some of you succeed and most of us are still struggling.

Hello this is Sam. Here in Osaka, Japan.
I only use my good old PowerBook Mercury 500MHz, Memory1GB.
I bought the iLife 08 and was having trouble installing iMovie 08.
After this hint I found here, I was succesful! and I am enjoying my iLife life! I also went to an apple retail store in Osaka to attend the iLife class.
Thank you very much. I wish Apple will be nicer to the old Mac users!
