iMovie 7.1 (the latest update to the version of iMovie in iLife '08) will only run on G5 Macs or later. Or so it seems. There's a way to hack it to work on G4s as well. Simply add a patch to the program's contents, as explained here.

Hack to run iMovie 7.1 on G4s
This hint works great! I've been using this hack since the new iMovie was released. And, when Apple updates iMovie, they are always quick to update the hack too (less than a day for the 7.1 update). iMovie runs great on my iBook G4 (1.42 GHz, 1.5 GB RAM), I don't understand why Apple would cripple iMovie and not iWeb because iWeb is slower than a dog and iMovie isn't. If you want to use iMovie on your unsupported G4 system, definately bookmark that site, I did.
Hack to run iMovie 7.1 on G4s
I did this yesterday, It took me longer than it should have as the hint says using hexedit look for : 7C 08 02 A6 in the two lines
12B63C:
But I could not find them. at a guess that this was the actual lines meant I did the change on them. It worked. ---
Hack to run iMovie 7.1 on G4s
You're in the right spot. The reason it doesn't make sense to you is because you probably don't understand hex.
Hack to run iMovie 7.1 on G4s
Can't get it to work on my Aluminum 12" Powerbook. Must be some other parameters that the script is looking for.
Hack to run iMovie 7.1 on G4s
Intead of HexEditor, HexFiend might be a better option, since it is quite more gentle on memory no matter the size of the file it opens. And it is free too.
Hack to run iMovie 7.1 on G4s
I managed to install iMovie on my G4 17inch (1Ghz), and software update provided me an upgrade to 7.1.
Hack to run iMovie 7.1 on G4s
This hack sounds fantastic, but I'm completely unable to figure it out. I'm familiar with Linux and DOS os's like Windows, but new to Mac OSX.
Hack to run iMovie 7.1 on G4s
I decided to copy the DVD to my desktop for editing. Now I've got a file called "iLife '08.mpkg". I assumed is was a compressed file, like a zip or tar, but my unzip program (stuffit expander) says the file is actually a directory. (?!)
Hack to run iMovie 7.1 on G4s
I used Pacifist to access the iMove file then I upgraded to 7.1. I found the data in question and changed it. It didn't work on my 17" G4. I downloaded the shortcut file and replaced the one in iMovie. That didn't work either.
Hack to run iMovie 7.1 on G4s
Seems to be identical to the problem I encountered.
Hack to run iMovie 7.1 on G4s
It worked on my G4 12"" powerbook.
But I started with a 7.1 file, which I had on my G5. I did not need to do an update, that maybe the problem. If you go back a step and do not do the upgrade from 7.0.1 , look at: http://www.teksanity.com/iMovie/iMovie_08_on_G4/7.0.1.html ---
Hack to run iMovie 7.1 on G4s
Hi guys !!! It seems i'm not the only one struggling with that iMovie 7.1 subject !!! I tried so far the only option available to get over it but it doesn't work... indeed, it looks like it works (the iMovie launch properly) but suddenly fails and quit... I then have that message asking me if I want to restart, quit or send a report. Can't go more further here... i'm wondering how come some of you succeed and most of us are still struggling.
