One solution to a missing Pages '08 word count feature Apps
After a month of testing, I am delighted with Pages '08 as a replacement for Microsoft Word. However, one feature that Pages lacks is the ability to show you the number of words above the cursor. The Info pane of the Document Inspector will show a live word count, and it will count the words in a selection. However, unlike Word, it does not show that you are at word X in a document whose total word count is Y.

Here's a simple workaround. Press Shift-Home. This will select all the text back to the beginning of the document. A quick glance at the inspector will show the number of words in that block of text. Then tap the right arrow key and the cursor is back where you started.

Why do you think it's "missing?"

I have a wordcount for Pages 08 open right now.

It's in the Inspector in the Document > Info tabs. It does count my selection or entire document. It also counts paragraphs, characters (with and without spaces), and graphics.

It's live and updates as I type. Yeah, I have to keep the inspector window open, but I have to do that a lot anyway (or you can invoke/hide it with a key combo).

"Missing wordcount feature?" Hardly.

oops. I'm an idiot. I must have skipped the first paragraph and missed your explanation of exactly what kind of word counting you want.

My apologies.

Well that's very helpful that you've posted that...

but there's no need to sound so smug.
