Convert Panasonic SDR-S10 MOD movies Other Hardware
Problem: Connecting the Panasonic SDR-S10 camcorder via USB works fine on the Mac, but you can't use the MOD files in QuickTime Player or in iMovie HD by default.

Solution: Using ffmpeg (part of the MacPorts project) enables you to convert those MOD files into DV files without quality loss. Use this Terminal command:
ffmpeg -i MOV001.MOD -target ntsc-dv video.dv
The resulting file (in this example, video.dv) can then be used in iMovie HD. You can also create result files with a special aspect ratio setting or in PAL format:
mpeg -i video.avi -target pal-dv -aspect 16:9 video.dv
[robg adds: While I haven't tested this hint, note that you can install ffmpeg without using MacPorts; this hint explains the process.]

You dont need to.
Just rename the mod files to .mov and you are all game.

I just made an automator script that renamed all the files on the card to .mov straight up, and it worked like a charm.

cheers

Hi klarkkent

Can you explain your steps more clearly. I am a Mac newbie. I hava an iMac OS 10.4 and the Panasonic SDR-S10.

I can easily read the mod files from my USB-Card-Reader. I tried to rename them to .mov like you said but neither I can open it in Quicktime (current version) nor iMovie (the version before iLife 08).

All I want to achieve is to view my mod movies in Quicktime.

How did you achieve it...?

Thanks, Juergen

I have been copying, converting and bringing the converted MOD files into iMovie '06. However, iMovie '08 solves ALL those problems. I simply remove SD card and plug it into a SD card reader. iMovie '08 immediately brings ALL the files. No need to manually copy files and convert anymore!!!

You appear to be making this very complicated. Here is the answer:
1. Drop your .mov file into toast titanium.
2. Select file in window
3. Find export dialogue box and then set export parameters.
4. This works for both 4:3 and 16:9 settings
5. If you really need to insert movie into iMovie and start playing.

Dead easy.

I have bought iLife 08 and installed it successfully I can read the SD-Card via card-reader or via cam but iMovie does not recognise the files. I can't drop them either. What is wrong...?

The .MOD video files are modified MPEG-2 files with audio in a non-standard Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound setup which Final Cut Pro, iMovie and most other Mac video editors cannot import natively.
How to convert MOD to MP4, MOV, MKV, etc. on Mac ?

MOD is an usual video format created by camera like Panasonic and JVC, since it's not a mac suitable format to imovie or quicktime, etc. How to play and edit Panasonic SDR-S series videos on Mac OS X? http://www.applemacvideo.com/camera/convert-panasonic-sdrs-videos-mac.html
