Create a personal replacement for the .Mac service Network
The following is not mine, but I ran across it and it looks awesome. If you like the services .Mac provides, but would rather provide them yourself and you have a spare machine lying around, this how-to explains the steps required to do just that. I'm going to try it later tonight on an ubuntu server at home, and will post my findings in the comments.

[robg adds: Typically I would contact the author and request permission to repost their solution here, so we have it in the system. However, this particular how-to is quite long, very detailed, and contains lots of screenshots. It's also not for the faint of heart, as you'll have to do a fair bit of digging to find info, and then some configuration work. You're not just setting up a server that provides .Mac-like services, but you're setting it up such that the functions on your machine that use .Mac actually work with your internal server.]

Perfect for a Mac mini
Authored by: stukdog on Aug 16, '07 07:41:18AM

I ran thru these steps just last weekend on a Mac mini that we have in our facility. It's a lengthy project, but works quite fine when finished.

Wow....

Looks like I finally have a use for my old iBook. Just need to attach a bigger HD to it, and I'll be good to go. Going to give this a try over the weekend.

There are some limitations
Authored by: DamienMcKenna on Aug 16, '07 11:19:21AM

Note that there are some limitations:
* It uses an old release of Apache - v2.0.50 vs the current v2.2.4.
* If you want quota support (accurate reporting of how much disk space is available) you need to compile the mod_dav module from source.
* iSync doesn't work.

notMac Challenge

For the faint of heart, there's a something similar to the XP on Mac prize called the notMac Cahllenge that's soliciting contributions to reward whomever can, basically, put a GUI interface on the process described in the link. So far the prize is worth $7,786.

notMac Challenge

beware this notmac challenge is now an extremely old affair; being one of the very first money contributors myself, I now consider it dead (and the guy has "our" k$ on his account for more than a year now).
Unless there is recent and strong changes on the site, I'd advocate against contributing money.
The site owner doesn't even address the issue of when (and how) he'll consider refunding.

Any ideas if this works on Leopard? NotMac doesn't as yet (at least not as a client).
