I use MacTheRipper and VisualHub to convert my DVD movies for iTunes / Apple TV use. After VisualHub automagically imports the movie to iTunes, I look up the movie on IMDB.com or MovieGoods.com to find the DVD cover that I like.

Once I find the DVD cover, within iTunes I do a Get Info on the movie, click the Artwork section, and drag the image from Firefox directly to the Artwork section. (You may have to delete what iTunes auto-picked for you.) Then cut/paste the movie's description into the Info » Comments section, so you have the movie's short description. This gives your iTunes / AppleTV movies clean look.

You have to check out Handbrake: http://handbrake.m0k.org/, it does everything the above programs do. Every protected disc I have thrown at it, comes through.

Anamorphic output, take advantage of every pixel you can.

Several surround encodings: 5.1 to Dolby Surround Pro Logic 2 etc.

De Interlacing.

Oooh the quality Handbrake spits out makes me go Ooooh! And at a reasonable speed to.

Handbrake is the sh-t!

I use Handbrake because when I change the tags/image in iTunes, anything encoded via VisualHub takes 10-15 mins to save. The ones I did in Handbrake are instant. Also, Handbrake allows me to do 160Kbps stereo.

Yes, Handbrake is very cool. The latest version has pre-sets for Apple TV and iPod.

I expect an iPhone pre-set will be added soon.

The last version I used of Handbrake, there were some real problems with sound dropping out in the final movie. Anyone know if this has been resolved?

I'm using VisualHub now and it is far more reliable

Why would you need an separate iPhone preset? An iPhone is also an iPod. There are already settings for the iPod.

Does anyone know how to add artwork to a video that has chapter marks?

From what I gather, a movie with chapter marks becomes a native QuickTime document (which doesn't have an album artwork meta data field), as opposed to an iTunes Video file (which does).

I've tried creating chapter marks for a video that has artwork (and it overrides the artwork) as well as adding artwork to a video that already has chapter marks (does not accept artwork).

As far as I can tell you can either have a video in iTunes with artwork, OR with chapter marks. Of course, purchased videos from the iTunes Store do not have this limit. Anyone know how you can replicate this functionality?
