Non-iPhone-related changes in iTunes 7.3 Apps
I haven't seen this elsewhere, but iTunes 7.3 adds a few additional subtle changes apart from the iPhone support:
  • Smarter iPod updates: If you try to sync your iPod and haven't enough room, iTunes will tell you how much space is required and how much is currently left on your iPod. So you know exactly how much space you need to free up to sync your new files.
  • New default sorting: Artists beginning with numbers (e.g. 2Raumwohnung, +44, The 5 6 7 8's) used to appear at the top of the artist list. They now appear right at the bottom.
  • UI changes: As John Gruber points out, iTunes now uses different gradients in the source list.
[robg adds: In addition to the above list, our good friend Anonymous submitted the following item; I'm combining them two tips into one hint for easy future reference.
  • Edit video tags: It's now possible to edit some tags directly in iTunes in a way that was not previously possible. If you transcode your own video content to iPod (or iPhone) compatible formats and play it, it's helpful to be able to tag it as a "TV Show," "Movie," or "Music Video." There's a new tab, Video, in the Get Info box for the video tracks, and changing these tags is now supported. The rewriting of the track can be somewhat slow, however -- basically the application does a full copy with the new tag information. Note that this obviates the need for this hint for some tags, but not all.
Anonymous also pointed out that artists whose names include quotes (as in "Weird Al" Yankovic) are also now shown at the bottom of the list.]

There's also a "Sync" button on the iPod screen, when an iPod is connected. Before you would have to Control-click on the iPod, or go through the File menu. It's about time they did something this basic.

Not a Mac thing - but a "bonus" in Windows XP - a couple of apps using SSL got confused by iTunes 7.3 installing and using a new version of LIBEAY32.dll. Only three hours to get my email back - hooray for Windows!

also, coverflow works now with podcasts.

From what I remember the coverflow animation itself has changed slightly, it is more organic now, and looks like in the iphone.

I had the "can't save your library because of a -50 error" message pop up every few seconds or so so I had to downgrade to itunes 7.2.

The most incredible aspect of this is the amount of threads that were shortened/deleted on friday afternoon on this "-50" error, on numerous apple related sites. I had never seen anything like this before.

OK, the video tab has been there for a while, because that's the way I've been able to upload my own tv shows into iTunes to watch on my AppleTV. Unfortunately there still is not a way to bulk change video tags, i.e. select a bunch of files and label them all the same TV Show. Also it would be nice to be able to drag files between Movies, Music Videos and TV Shows to update the tags.

Agreed. I'm still running 7.2 and it's been in there since I've been using this version. I suspect it came along with AppleTV support.

Looks like the sorting also ignores the leading "A", e.g. "A Perfect Circle" is now sorted to "P" instead of "A".

Party Shuffle
Authored by: lullabud on Jul 03, '07 10:03:58AM

One thing I noticed, which used to irk me before and now is great, concerns party shuffle. The use case is you're in Party Shuffle and you delete a song that is queued up to play.

Before, when doing this, you would end up with nothing highlighted. If you hit the Up arrow, you'd be highlighted on the last entry in the list, and if you hit the Down arrow you'd be highlighted on the first entry in the list. I used to hit CMD-L to get to the playing song, then arrow down a few songs, or whatever.

Now, when you hit delete, your highlight goes to the song above the one you were selected on, so you can continue arrowing down or up through the list of songs from approximately where you were already at.

"Get All" podcasts now in iTunes 7.3

Another new feature I found was in the Podcasts management page. You can select "Get All" from subscribed podcasts with undownloaded episodes.

If 'Get Album Artwork' command was unsuccessful, a window with the information about it will pop-up.

Holey moley, I'm so glad to know that "Anonymous also pointed out that artists whose names include quotes (as in "Weird Al" Yankovic) are also now shown at the bottom of the list.]" I make a few tunes myself, and my artist name has quotes in it. I would have assumed those tunes weren't in the list, and gone looking again....

Wait - the Video tab isn't new at all
Authored by: thirdoptical on Jul 03, '07 11:59:06AM

"There's a new tab, Video, in the Get Info box for the video tracks, and changing these tags is now supported."

whatever - this was in 7.2 for sure. I've been using the Video tab for a long time tagging my shows as shows, and movies as movies, changing the show, season number, episode ID and episode number...

nothing about that is new to 7.3

Agreed - that's been there for at least 2 versions now. I've been tagging videos with that for the last 3 or 4 months.

It appears that external sync via FireWire is now also inoperative. I know it's been deprecated for a while, but now it appears to be off - my firewire adapter doesn't work with my iPod Photo from two years ago, but seems to work fine from my daughter's machine, which hasn't upgraded to 7.3 yet.

Also, 7.3 refuses to add artwork to AIFF files.

OK, that's more of a bug in 7.3, but thought you should know.

Artist selection change/bug
Authored by: ttt on Jul 04, '07 12:23:46AM

It used to be that you selection was maintained when you switched from Music to another library or playlist. Now it switches to selecting All if you switch back. I'm finding it rather annoying, and I wonder by what logic they discard my selection, especially if I'm trying to play songs restricted by artist.

This change will drive me nuts!! I practically celebrated when Jobs mentioned how iTunes remembers your view, because I'll often select some things from one playlist, check and see if they're on another playlist, switch back to the selection, select more, etc. It's the only way to make comparisons in a single-window application. Fortunately iTunes still remembers which songs were highlighted, but it ignores what was selected in the Browser columns (Genre/Artist/Album). Grrr ;)

Single window Application? Double-Click on any playlist Icon, and it will open in a new window...

"Single window Application? Double-Click on any playlist Icon, and it will open in a new window..."

Yes; I called it that because it was designed as a single window interface, like iPhoto (which also supports double-clicking to edit a photo in a new window).

It now supports tags on movies files with a 5.1 AAC track. Previously the only thing that would be saved was the title of the movie.

Numbers after letters? What kind of weird bizarro world is this? As a lifelong geek, I expect numbers before letters because that's the standard ASCII order, that's how Finder sorts names, it's the way the phone book sorts, it's how an index in a book is sorted, it's how <i>everything</i> is sorted. This pisses me off because it makes no sense.

There's also some weird and whacky id3 tag changes that I can't work out.
I started to play tracks from an existing album that I'd previously imported (as mp3s) into an older version of iTunes (not ripped from CD), and suddenly every track in the album that I played would disappear.

When I started to play a track, it would have it's artist/album info changed, and appear under a different listing. I then started changing them back, and things started getting really weird, and some would change album/artist and some wouldn't. What's really weird, is when i ran the command-line id3v2 tool to check their tags, none had any tags to start with.... So I've no idea where iTunes was getting this new info from.

Eventually I gave up, deleted them all, force-stripped both id3v1 and id3v2 tags from the mp3s, re-imported them and re-tagged them all by hand...

I hope this doesn't start happening to more albums in my library....
