It's Safari 3 tips day... Site News
Well, mostly. There are a couple others in the mix, but most of today's tips are about Safari 3. Amongst the tips, there are two Safari for Windows hints -- this isn't a sign of change, but since many of us will be using Safari on Windows in Parallels, Boot Camp, or Fusion to test sites, I felt it fair to share these hints. As with iTunes, we won't get into actual Windows-related hints here, but if someone submits something about iTunes or Safari for Windows that may help Mac users use those apps better, then I'll probably run the hint.

Safari 3 Mac hint.
Authored by: asher on Jun 13, '07 08:14:16AM

Safari 3 beta gave me problems until I updated Adobe Reader from the 7 version I had been using to the latest version 8. The beta would crash if I clicked a pdf file.

Don't bother
Authored by: SOX on Jun 13, '07 09:25:12AM

1) it's a beta and so it's buggy.
2) I can't see any wow-wee diffs drom safari 2. the big news is the windows roll-out
3) It needs 49Megs of disk space to install
4) actually more, ecause you can't throw out the installer after you install because you may need the uninstaller.
5) it will overwrite safari 2.0 when it installs
6) there is apparently no safari 2 install downloadable for apple. so if you install it over safari 2, you can't just re-install safari 2.

The uninstaller restores Safari 2.

But I echo the sentiment of "don't bother." I like Safari because it's stable and reliable. v3 does nothing to maintain that.

It seems that Safari 3 doesn't play well with phpMyAdmin. The left frame is really small and I can't resize it like I could in Safari 2.

Pithhelmet
Authored by: b00le on Jun 13, '07 09:50:55AM

Safari 3 disables Pithhelmet as you might expect, but for reasons beyond me, this caused Netnewswire Light to crash; removing Pithhelmet completely fixes the problem. Pithhelmet files:
/Library/InputManagers/SIMBL
/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/PithHelmet.bundle
/Library/Frameworks/DuctTape.framework
~/Library/Application Support/PithHelmet/PithHelmet.log
~/Library/Application Support/PithHelmet/com.apple.Safari/PHRuleSet.ka

As of mid-december 2007, PithHelmet is in beta for Safari 3. Check here:

http://www.culater.net/thc/index.php?entry=/Development/PithHelmet/beta_v2_8_2.txt

If that link dies in the future, the main PithHelmet page should have the relevant info, and is here:

I also installed it, being, for me, the highlight of the whole keynote and uninstalled it yesterday because it made launchbar not index my firefox bookmarks anymore which I thought was strange.

When you use the uninstaller it replaces everything to the way it was, so safari is now back to 2.04.

I rememeber reading somewhere that the safari beta 3 installer places a lot of stuff around, even a new version of the dock, but, again, everything is back to normal thank god.

Whose was the idea to enable tabs to become independent windows? Is this really useful to anyone? Or maybe thy're just trying to get us used to having more and more gratuitious zooming animations in the OS? Again, I wasn't impressed at all and a few times I couldn't even click on links and have it go somewhere, they just wouldnt register.

For me, being able to drag tabs around and between windows was a big plus - I often end up with too many windows each containing arbitrary assortments of content, and want to be able to organise them.

The speed boost was also very nice.

And if you have the Debug menu enabled, there are some nice new bits.

But it seemed a bit too buggy - and other things, like iChat, had some hiccups after I installed it, so I've gone back for now. Looking forward to a less-buggy version, though.

Google apps work in Safari 3. You still get a warning that Safari isn't supported but it works anyway. Not if only FCKEditor would work!

The one thing that impressed me about Safari3 is already built into the WebKit nightlies: Resizer Controls on forms.

[link:]http://expatleo.wordpress.com/2007/06/11/safari-30-beta-form-text-resizers/

So just run the webkit nightly and [for now] stay away from Safari3 until the [webkit using] vendors catch up with the beta.

SafariStand can cause issues too.
Authored by: xplora on Jun 13, '07 02:12:51PM

The Site Alteration option when enabled causes you to have to reload every page.
and the set "_blank" to open in new tab just stops such links from working.

However the organise downloads into dated folders does still work.

One thing I do like, drag'n'drop now works properly between form elements.

Yes. The problem here is when Site Alteration it's on.

Yeah, I can't agree. Using that same logic, you should start posting hints about Internet Explorer, IIS and MS Access.

The site is called "Mac OS Hints" not "Apple Hints". I don't actually have a problem with posting all types of Apple related hints but it is out of scope of what the site is meant to offer.

Hi All,

Not a tips but the Safari 3 crashed during it's launched time!
Still too early to give comments on the beta software.

Cheers,

CQ

New features
Authored by: beccles on Jun 13, '07 07:45:21PM
A description of two of the announced new features (and why I like them)
  • 'Find' doesn't pop up a new window anymore, but creates a new bar under the tabs. As you type it starts searching the web page (inline find), and the way it highlights the found words is quite cool
    • This is quite handy, as often I can't find the highlighted word if the highlighting is the same colour as the background
  • The adjustable size of textfields. In my work place we often encounter incredibly short textfields for forms that require us to type in paragraphs of info. Making these fields taller makes proof reading so much easier.
Other nice things
  • can bookmark all open tabs in one go
  • can reopen all windows from last session
A change on the Debug menu (which initially troubled me cos I couldn't find the option, again as this is something I need to cope with my Windows-centric workplace): the User Agent option is now handily at the top!

only problem i had was needing to re-install flash and shockwave. the weird 1 was it messed with ichat. i got failed to load errors and long delays. I uninstalled and that got rid of the issue. re-installed beta and removed chax and that resolved the issue. if any one knows why ichat would get funky with chax by installing safari 3 please let me know i am still clueless

Simple. Chax, like SafariStand etal is an InputManager.

The problem with InputManager extensions like Chax, and SIMBL extensions is they work on the entire system.

Also, it's probably the case, someone correct me, that iChat also uses the WebCore framework that's used/installed with Safari or Safari3.

So: InputManager extensions mess up Safari3. And any application, widget, or other item that uses that WebCore framework [in English: 'shared resource'].

In my case, VelaClock uses WebCore.. so that was a dealbreaker for me, so I went back to Safari2 and now just use the WebKit Nightly -- which does not touch/install/use base system WebCore.

Probably because NetNewsWire relies on the core WebKit which is replaced with Safari3. I posted a new blog entry about what gets replaced so that users can make an informed decision as to whether they want to use Safari3 or the Nightly WebKit build:

[link:]http://expatleo.wordpress.com/2007/06/14/so-what-is-changed-in-safari3/

Me? I'm staying with WebKit Nightly. I like the form textarea controls... everything else is just icing on the cake until Leopard arrives.

I also found that the tabs are "reorderable" by dragging them. (At least on the windows version)
