Restart a 'Not Responding' Butler Apps
I found this out by accident. If Butler hangs, double-click on the icon in Applications (or wherever you have it) and it will start responding again. This also works by invoking Butler from Spotlight. I'm not sure if this works with other applications as well.

[robg adds: I've noticed that Butler only seems to hang when there's a dialog in another app that it's not expecting. For instance, I use Butler to control iTunes. But if I opened an iTunes dialog at some point -- maybe to enter a password -- and didn't finish, then Butler will hang when I tell it to switch songs. As soon as I close the dialog, though, Butler returns to normal.]

I have Butler set to start at login, and sometimes it hangs and doesn't start up fully. In that case, I'll pop open a terminal and enter:
killall Butler
and then re-launch it from the Applications folder.

Butler is great and so is all of Peter Mauer's software.

Check out Witch and Service Scrubber as well.

Thanks for the tips on restarting Butler under stress.

I've found Default Folder X to cause trouble with Butler and with others. With a relatively clean system Butler behaves well.

If your on Leopard (10.5) and using Scrubber, maybe you want to check this hint: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080110102506923

It suggest not to use Scrubber with Apple signed apps...
