Use EyeConnect to access Mac media on a PlayStation 3 Other Hardware
Since Sony released the firmware update 1.80 for the PlayStation 3 (PS3), the PS3 can now display images and play music or video files that are stored on a personal computer or digital video recorder with DLNA Media Server functionality over a network.

The only way I actually found to access media files stored on my mac from my PS3 was to install EyeConnect from Elgato Systems. They have a fully-functional 30-day demo on the above-linked page, so you can test it out for yourself. It works great with my setup.

And how did you get it to work? I just tried it and the PS3 could not find any media servers on the network, and EyeConnect couldn't see the PS3.

I logged out and back in, that didn't help.

It's easier if you have your media server files + Eyeconnect connected directly to the router (hard wired) rather than wireless. It shows up right away. Otherwise you have to tinker the wireless settings for firewall and such. I have mine setup and it works wonderful. The downside is that you can only stream MPEG 1-2 video files... this is because Elgato's (makers of Eyeconnect) main purpose for this product is to stream EyeTV files which is natively mpeg 1-2. I use VisualHub to batch convert my avi, xvid, etc., files to mpeg and have my PS3 connect to my shared movie folders via eyeconnect and I'm happy camper.

I had a problem until I opened port #2170 (name it EyeConnect) in my firewall. Voila! All my laptop files appeared!
However, on my desktop computer I keep my iTunes files on an external hard drive. I have been unable to get eyeConnect to see them yet... still working on it.

An alternative solution is TwonkyMedia Server, a beta of which is now available that has support for the PS3's new streaming feature. The link is available from their forums, but it appears the download link for the Mac OS X version of the beta is currently broken. I have installed an earlier beta (4.4b2), and it was pretty buggy but promising. I haven't been able to get my hands on the latest beta, (4.4b3 I think) since the link is broken.

I've installed the latest Twonky media software. No problems on installing or configuring the server, only you have to allow some ports on your Mac firewall. PS3 and Twonky really like each other, the only wait now is for the PS3 to support different movie/audio formats....
