Prevent iPod Shuffle from reverting to start of playlists iPod
My iPod shuffle would occasionally behave strangely on start-up -- rather than resume play where it was when last powered off, it would resume play where it was when last powered on. That is, if I had listened to three hours of music yesterday, it would start at the beginning, not the end, of that three-hour block today.

I eventually discovered that this behaviour occurs if the Shuffle is paused, then left alone until the green light stops blinking, then turned off. Turning the iPod off immediately produced the expected behaviour. Since I don't imagine it is a frequent occurrence to want to "rewind" the iPod in this way, I mention this not so much as a hint, and more as a suggestion for what to be sure not to do, if you're absent-minded like me.

In other words, to clarify: this hint is to PAUSE your iPod Shuffle but turn it off BEFORE the green light stops blinking, in order to have your iPod Shuffle remember where it last was.

Another way of dealing with this same issue is to simply PAUSE your iPod Shuffle and not turn it off at all.

Of course, there are many ways around this -- you can pause your Shuffle and not turn it off (but that uses more battery life), or you can pause it and turn it off before the green light stops blinking, or you can just turn it off without pausing it at all. My problem was just that I didn't know what behaviour was causing this until recently, so I didn't know what to do differently.

Not a problem for me

I have one of the second generation color iPod shuffles and I don't have such a problem. Whether I turn it off immediately or pause, wait until the light stops blinking and then turn it off or pause and never turn it off, my iPod starts where I last stopped listening.

Thanks for taking the time to figure this out. This drives me nuts.
anyway, I would suppose the tip is:
If you have paused your iPod Shuffle and then left it on, play a few seconds and pause again before you turn it off.

Not a problem on mine either

I tested this on my Shuffle 2G too and it does not behave as descrinbed in the hint. My iPod starts like the second commenter in all scenarios at the spot I stopped it. Therefore this is either restricted to 1G Shuffles (can the original poster indicate which Shuffle he/she has: the first generation or second generation) or there is something else going on.

The iPod Shuffle has always been unacceptably buggy. I reported at least 5 different bugs to Apple geniuses, which I patiently demonstrated. I ended up giving it away and going with the Nano, when it came out. Yes, I'm bitter about my iPod Shuffle experience.

This bug totally ruined my experience with the first generation iPod Shuffle. Good to know how to reproduce it. If enough people file a bug report it might get solved. Maybe I can learn to love the Shuffle once more. ;-P

Thanks to commenters for reminding me that I left out important information. This behaviour is with the old 1G Shuffle; from the comments, it sounds like it doesn't happen with the new 2G (so maybe the bug was fixed after all).
