Easily download YouTube movies via Safari Web Browsers
If you're using Safari, there's an easy way to download YouTube videos. Open the page with the movie and press Command-Option-A, which shows the Activity window. If you're also loading other sites, you'll see a list of them: scroll until you find the YouTube page and click on the arrow to show details about what is being loaded.

You will certainly notice an element whose size is over 0.5MB (most of the time, over 5MB). Double-click on it (even if it is still loading), and Safari will download it. When the download is over, navigate to the file in the Finder (which will probably be called get_video) and add the extension .flv to its name. Now you can play it with VLC or with QuickTime (only if you have Perian installed).

[robg adds: We've covered the use of the Activity window before, but with the popularity of YouTube, I felt it was worth pointing out this one specialized use.]

You can also bookmark this and click on it for downloading the movie in the frontmost tab/window:

javascript:window.open('http://youtube.com/get_video?video_id='+window.location.href.split('?')[1].match(/v=([^(&|$)]*)/)[1]+'&t='+document.getElementById('movie_player').src.match(/t=([^(&|$)]*)/)[1]);

Unfortunately I can't remember where I originally found it.

I like these little scripts myself, I have one that puts the URL your viewing in Safari into the body of an email ready to send using Mail. Thanks for this it'll be added to my Bookmark Bar.

I was using this page in a tab for downloading Youtube videos. Just cut and paste the videos url.

Good suggestion, but I found a newer and more reliable way to save the video. It's a Mac OSX software app just makes the whole process much easier for yourself. I don't have to copy/paste all that java code every time. It's a free program called "fastest youtube downloader" (fastestyoutubedownloader.com) to download and also convert it to an mp3 or whatever format I want at the same time. It's really slick... you should be using if you're at all serious about saving youtube videos.

I do this to save movies also. You can also play the movie by opening it in safari. An extension change isn't necessary.

When I command-click a YouTube video, a contextual menu appears that lets me copy the flv file to my download folder. Is that standard or do I owe it to a Safari plug-in/extension/enhancer?

You have safari stand.
That's the best way, just click & save, and it gets the appropriate name & extension.

OK I downloaded and installed SafariStand. I had to create the InputManager folder per the instructions. When I opened Safari and tried the contextual menu it looks as always, no option to save a flv video. Do I need to turn on one of the SafariStand preferences?

Wait for the movie to finish downloading, then the contextual menu should show a save option.
It only works for flv's, not for swf's. And after enjoying this great feature since I found out about it, today I discovered it is broken. Apparently because I installed the latest version of flash player, which I saw complaints about (after it was too late) on both versiontracker & macupdate. Now in safari I get the same flash player contextual menu, so I thought youtube had switched everything to swf. I tried a few other sites, same result. I tried the same ones in Firefox, and am still able to download the flv. Weird.

You have to Command-click the video, not Control- or Right-click it. It's not the contextual menu but another one.

Has anyone found a way to do this in Leopard?
I have Safari Stand installed with Safari 3.OhWhatever and it now no longer allows me to download from You Tube. I have "get flv" but this method titled the file, automatically appended the extension and saved it to my downloads file. I miss this!

This works with MP3's and other formats in a lot of sites that use Flash-based MP3 players. I've used this numerous times to grab MP3's this way.

Double-click, you say?

I'm running the latest version of the OS and Safari and this hint is a no-go. Double-clicking the player2.swf?video_id... file opens a new Safari window and plays the video in the full window. No download.

Is that the correct file? It's pretty much impossible to go by filesize. I see no less than eight files >= 5 KB.

Have any suggestions?

Or use freeware TubeTv http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/24679/tubetv

There's a menu option to download from safari without having to download the flv again. I guess it just grabs the file from Safari's cache.

To download a converted YouTube movie merely add the letters pwn to the YouTube link immediately following www.

You will be taken to a site with buttons to download *.mov

Learned this at Apple Store this week. So slick and simple.

The home page of this service is: [link:]http://deturl.com/

Heh, that's cool! Unfortunately it doesn't convert them as you say, but you can download the FLV and high quality MP4 if available. (Same as keepvid.com or other sites. Cool shortcut though.) Maybe at some point youtube did use the .mov format for the high quality videos...

Thanks!

Authored by: NoiseDamaged on Mar 13, '10 03:41:28AM

I don't feel like figuring out when it's required given it's 6:30 am and i've been up all night. But you need to hold the option key when you double click the file in some cases to donload flash videos (this should work for all embedded flash videos). If you don't, the file may open in the browser and not download it.

i tried this exactly, even downloading perian, and whenever i click on the file to watch it, it just says

main: no suitable decoder module for fourcc 'undf.' VLC probably does not support this sound or video format

i've tried changing the file extension manually, but it still doesn't work; it only works when i change it via zamzar.com, but that uses up a LOT of internet usage and i don't want to waste it. how can i fix this?

Hi there. I was trying to do this for a youtube video. I dont know if I am doing this right but somehow it won't work. So after letting the video download I pressed Command Alt/Option A and it came up with the recent activity little tab. It had the youtube running program already on it. So i double clicked on it to get the arrow to go down so that I am able to see the get_video but everytime I click on it to open it- it goes an opens up a new page and its a blank page. Plus I know that its a SWF not a FLV here is the details below: http://www.youtube.com/get_video?video_id=SPf0sClRgrU&noflv=1&t=vjVQa1PpcFPOPxMu7K31g78IjhZ_q40JvYS4KRfYn8c=&fmt=34&asv=3&el=detailpage
I really wanted to download that video but I dont know what to do. I must be missing something but if I cant even double click it to get it to open to see what its like by the way it doesnt have no KB on it. the other ones have a KB bigger than 0.5 its roughly around 122KB or more or some less. Am really confused and sorry to make this a long question. Hopefully someone is able to help me. So confused.
Thanks so much :-)

As I know this method doesn't work with the latest version of Safari. Today it's better to use online YouTube downloaders, which are free or to purchase a third party app like Elmedia Player PRO or iTubeStudio (http://www.macvideoconverter.org). They are not free, but they allow downloading the videos from video sites in a couple of clicks.

I also thought it wasn't working anymore. Some of the file sizes now seem to be hidden, and none of the displayed file sizes seems big enough to be the video file.

So I tried to download random files within the list of the Activity window. I found out that I could still download the video (with the method described above) when choosing one of the three files named "http://o-o.preferre...". Two of these files download as "generate_204.html" files while the other one downloads as videoplayback.mp4.
