Observe Safari's dynamically changing tab titles Web Browsers
When you use tabs, Safari sets the tab's title to include the domain name as well as the page title. For instance, macosxhints.com - Submit a Hint. However, when you have more than one or two tabs opened on the same site, Safari drops the domain name from all the tabs, and just includes the page title: Submit a Hint

It somehow doesn't seem to be completely consistent, but Safari definitely changes the tab's titles on the fly, so as to avoid many macosxhi... tabs, which would be basically useless.

[robg adds: True, there's not really a hint here, but it's this kind of attention to detail that makes much Mac software so pleasant to use. I had never noticed the behavior in Safari before, but I had noticed that its tabs seemed somehow 'cleaner' than those in Camino ... and now I know why!]

This is actually even better than the hint suggests. Safari doesn't inject the domain name into the title, that's up to the website to do (if they want). What Safari does is drop any identical prefixes off sites. So if you're browsing three ESPN.com pages:

ESPN.com: MLB Scoreboard
ESPN.com: Boston Red Sox Clubhouse
ESPN.com: NFL Index

You'll get tabs that say

MLB Scoreboard
Boston Red Sox Clubhouse
NFL Index

It works this way for any text, wether it's a domain name or not!

But why can't we -change- the titles? :(

Right now my titles say:
"OGZPY|FCX|Chasin|Shop N|Intern|Dog Tr|$2697|Busine|My 1st|Auto|How"

I have about 4 Safari windows open with about 30 tabs in each. I don't know what half of these are about! I installed Stand's Stand Bar (it's an opera like preview column on the left hand side), and that has helped with the visual clue, but I'd still love to be able to change the titles (like I can do in iTerm tabs).

Paul

Just change to OmniWeb, it has BY FAR the best tab implementation for people like you and me who keep dozens of tabs open all the time. It uses WebKit, so rendering is nearly identical to Safari.

Is there a way to remove this behavior? I do not like it
