An open source app to convert videos for Apple TV/iPod Apps
CastCluster is an open source project that I wrote specifically for converting YouTube, Google Video, and local files to a format that I could play on my Apple TV.

[robg adds: With the apparent popularity of the Apple TV, apps like this one will prove useful to many folks -- if you have a favored way of converting such video, please list it in the comments.]

ffmegx !!!!!!
i use various firefox extensions to direct download embedded videos from websites and pump everything into ffmpegx whcih allows total manual control or easy preset templates for psp, ipod, divx etc.. conversion

About ffmpegX:

ffmpegX is a Mac OS X graphic user interface designed to easily operate more than 20 powerful Unix open-source video and audio processing tools including ffmpeg the "hyper fast video and audio encoder"

CastCluster uses ffmpeg for its video conversion... it just makes it easier to feed stuff to ffmpeg... then to get the results of that into itunes via RSS.

I guess I should have written a better description of what this product does...

It ultimately wraps ffmpeg to provide video conversion... the actual value add, is that it generates RSS feeds that can be an arbitrary mix of Youtube, Google Video, RSS or files from local folders. For the local folders and youtube videos, CastCluster uses video conversion to make the video an ipod and apple tv friendly format. e.g. you can get your favorite youtube users as an iTunes friendly podcast.

This project is in active development... I could really use your feedback if it's something you find useful... please email me (bachelderd (a@t) gmail (dot) com... or join the google group, which is linked to on the site.

thanks!

I've been using VisualHub for quite a while with excellent results. Granted, it is not free, but I find it well worth the money for all of the additional features it has.

I'm trying to convert my DVD collection to AppleTV and while FFMpeg does an ok job, my success has been 50/50. About half of the time, FFMpeg or any program that uses it fails to convert most of the audio. I have an iMac Core Duo and it takes about 4 hours to convert a 1 1/2 hour video. To find out that the audio cuts out after 2 minutes is a major waste of time, and unfortuntely embarrasement when you have friends over to see how cool your AppleTV is. As we embrace new technology, we wait for stability.
