Add chapter markers to ripped DVDs for Apple TV Apps
There are several applications out there that allow you to rip your own DVDs in a QuickTime format compatible with Apple TV. However, as of today, only Cinematize Pro is able to add the DVD chapter markers to the QuickTime file. The problem is that Cinematize Pro is quite expensive, and the quality is not as satisfactory as the one achieved with Mediafork (nee HandBrake).

With the help of MetaData Hootenanny, however, you can add the original DVD chapters to your QuickTime file quickly and for free:
  1. Rip your DVD disc with MediaFork (or any other application of your choice).
  2. Open Metadata Hootenanny and drag the QuickTime movie onto the Library.
  3. Click on the book icon (it's on the bottom right corner of Hootenanny's main window).
  4. Click on the button 'READ FROM DVD,' select the VIDEO_TS folder that you just ripped, and choose the title. Metadata Hootenanny will import the chapter times in the main window.
  5. Save (File » Save) the file in the location of your choice.
Now you can enjoy movies on Apple TV and skip through the main tracks as if you were playing a DVD!

Mediafork (now renamed back to handbrake) has this capability already in their nightly builds. The next regular build should have it. Or if you have subversion, download the latest build. It's quite slick.

SVN is at svn://handbrake.m0k.org/HandBrake/trunk
But I don't know enough about subversion and compilers to pull the code and build it myself :-(

Add chapter markers to ripped DVDs for Apple TV

I use Front Row a lot and don't have AppleTV. I thought that Apple TV and FR both run mp4 filed and I have been looking for a way to insert chapters into DVD movies ripped/compressed to avi and mp4 formats (so that I could advance thru chapters using Front Row and/or EyeHome).
I used this posted hint on an mp4 movie but found that the file, when saved, now has the ".mov" tag after the .mp4 tag (i.e., moviename.mp4.mov). When opened in Quicktime, the movie does in fact have the chapters imported from the DVD and will advance thru the chapters. However, I cannot get the chapter function when using Front Row; chapter entries on my remote are ignored. I have seen this before using software other than Metadatahootenanny that supposedly inserts chapters. These too work in Quicktime with .mov files but not in Front Row and also save the file as ".mov". It is entirely possible that my problem is specific to my system (Mac G5 Quad using Front Row Runner and a KeySpan remote). I would cetainly like to see a post in which the chapter function has been retained and can be used in Front Row (as well as AppleTV). Alternatively, perhaps someone knows what I might be doing wrong.

Sorry to comment on my own comment but ... I tried the OS X hint using my wife's MacBook which runs Front Row natively and uses the Apple remote. Even though the chaptered Quicktime file was a ".mov" it played in Front Row and chapter jumps worked just fine using the remote. Therefore. my earler issue is likely related to my hardware/software combination (G5 Quad running Front Row Runner and using a KeySpan remote).

phillip9, I'm having the same problem with iTunes. I also use Front Row on my MacBook Pro instead of Apple TV. I'm going to go ahead and download and compile the latest nightly build of MediaFork (Handbrake) and see if that works. This requires re-ripping DVDs, but so far I've only ripped one.

oops, I should have read your reply before posting mine. I had only tried chapters in iTunes. When I tried them in Front Row, they work. NEVER MIND.
