View the Desktop as a list to help with cleanup Desktop
This is so simple that maybe it isn't so obvious ... since the Desktop is often on the receiving end for so many images, downloads, and quick saves, that to clean it up I take the non-graphical approach.

Instead of trashing or dragging items from the desktop per se, I periodically open a Finder window and view the Desktop folder as a list that can, of course, be sorted by name, date, and so on. Try it; view your Desktop normally then switch to a list view. If your Desktop looks like mine, I guarantee you will find items you overlooked.

I had this problem, with a lot of folders, but then I found out that Automator can solve this all for me :)

What I did make him find all the Images on my Desktop and place then in my Pictures folder, same with other filetypes. Now my desktop and other dirs are cleaned and I can find back my stuff :)

It's all good but remember this: Desktop is a folder.
I used a script that was sorting all images in /Pictures folder and so on. One day, I did use this script to clean up my Desktop while having other folders on my Desktop (like temporary games, softwares, etc.)

Bad idea...

I ended up with all images (included in my games folders) in my /Pictures folder; Sounds (like games' mp3, etc.) in my /Music folder... Videos...

Anyway, I ended up with like 365 images in my /Pictures folder...

So just be careful with the Automator and/or Action scripts... Test it before and make sure you don't have any recursive folders on the Desktop! (Learn something new everyday!)

All well and good, but the actual desktop can also be sorted. In fact, mine remains auto-sorted by Kind.

There's a hint on this site that explains that your Desktop actually slows down if you keep too many files on it.

Do yourself a favor and start by creating a Downloads-folder...

I always access my desktop from a Finder window in list view. Unless I'm not running any applications, there's just too much stuff to move out of the way to see my desktop! :)
