In January at Macworld Expo, I gave my annual "Best of Mac OS X Hints" talk (gave it twice, actually, as the room was overflowing). The objective of the talk is to distill 9,900+ hints down into 75 minutes or so of my favorite hints. The challenge every year is to find hints that are neither too hard nor too easy (which means some of my actual favorites aren't actually included, as they'd fall into one of those categories), have visual qualities that make them good demo material, and that can be easily demonstrated to a crowd of a few hundred people -- and to find as many of those hints as possible that fit in the allotted time.

If you'd like to see how well (or poorly) I faired at that task this year, Macworld Expo (a sister company to Macworld) has made the video of my Best of Hints talk available free of charge to Macworld and Mac OS X Hints readers (640x480 96mb download). What you'll see in the video are my Keynote slides and real-time demos of each hint; what you'll hear is my voice; what you won't see (thankfully?) is my smiling face, as the video is restricted to the slides, demos, and audio (whew!).

This freebie is part of a promotion for Macworld Expo's new Macworld Encore service, which will allow you to purchase any or all of 80 different sessions from this year's Expo talks. (As of this morning, the Macworld Encore site isn't working, but it should be back online shortly.) If you thought some of the talks this year looked interesting but you either couldn't get to Expo, or couldn't make a given session, this might be a good way to see what you missed.

You probably know about this before, but you incorrectly stated that cmd-` cycles backward through applications. Actually, cmd-shift-Tab cycles backward through applications.

Cmd-` cycles through the windows of the foreground application. Cmd-~ cycles backwards through windows of the foreground application.

Great video otherwise. Good job.

Actually if you hit cmd-tab and keep cmd held down, then hit ` it cycles backwards. If you just hit cmd-` outside of the application switcher then yes it cycles application windows.

But within the application switcher, it cycles backwards through the list. Same as cmd-shift-tab.

In the Application Switcher both Cmd-Shift-Tab and Cmd-` cycle backwards. That is: once you've hit Cmd-Tab and keep holding down the Cmd key. In other words: as long as the Application Switcher window is visible then you can use Cmd-` to cycle backwards.

Terminal Hack
Authored by: NHN on Mar 10, '07 01:58:17AM

Hi,
really a nice video with much new information, albeit I was unable to get the modified Terminal message working.
How do I have to confirm the modification in order to be greeted by the new welcome screen? I think you were a little bit quick on this point.
Thanks a lot

I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that I would love to see a more complete list (even if it's just a bunch of links!) of your truly favorite tips, whether they be easy/hard/otherwise!

An overflowing room tells me that people are very curious about what they are missing. Just today I stumbled across a solution to a problem that I've had for a long time now.

The solution was 2 years old! I had just never seen it or forgotten it!

Rob,
You don't have to name a file "Aqua Blue.jpg" and put it in the Desktop Pictures folder to set the login window background. There is a pref to set the path of the file that should be used. Check out LoginWindow Manager.

Also, the "esc" key won't close Finder's "Connect to Server" window, so your key is just fine. ;-)

I liked this presentation, thank you.

Is there a place where the hints are listed?
