Xerox Phaser 8560 and Quark 6.5 PDF incompatibility Printers
I recently upgraded my Xerox Phaser 8400DP to a Phaser 8560DN printer. A few days later, when I attempted to output a PDF file using QuarkXPress 6.52, all I would get was an alert box stating that Quark was "Unable to create the xyz.pdf file." This was now happening consistently. Well, thanks to Quark's extremely detailed error reporting, I could tell immediately what the problem was ... NOT!

After hours of troubleshooting dead-ends, I finally figured out that when the Phaser 8560 printer was selected as the default printer, Quark would error instead of outputting PDFs. If any other printer was selected as default, Quark would instantly resume its PDF outputting capability.

I called Xerox, and after a nice session of less than 20 minutes, a support person actually took my word for it! While I waited, they installed their drivers for the new printer on a similar Powermac G4 to mine, opened a Quark 6.5 they already had installed, and tried the same (reproducible) technique to cause the error. They agreed that it was a verifiable error that is evidently caused by an incompatibility between Quark 6.5 and their new print drivers. They sent the problem on to their application programming technicians so that they could address the issue in the next bug-fix run. They could not, however, give me an ETA on that, but at least we know it is a Xerox issue.

The Problem: Anyone with a Power Mac who has Quark 6.x installed and a Phaser 8560 has a good possibility of not being able to export to PDF files. It is unknown if Intel Macs are affected.

The Workaround: Change the default printer to any other driver before attempting to output the PDF, and install an updated Xerox driver when it becomes available.

With Quark 6.x, I always found I had to select the Adobe PDF printer, even when using Quark's built in PDF maker. Otherwise the PDF's often came out with some errors in color or layout. If you have a PostScript printer chosen when making a PDF, Quark will use its settings, which is not always what you want.

Quark 7 fixes this, and makes PDF's in less than half the time!

I have seen some issues in the past with the XEROX PPDs and how they refer to the cups filter and PDEs.

There were a few revisions of the PPDs that used relative paths which made some apps somewhat confused. Then there would be stuff from the Postscript that the backend was looking for that did not exist. If the backend tried to use those values which had not been assigned to, then bad things would happen.

I don't have a problem PPD here, but a line like:
*cupsFilter: "application/vnd.cups-postscript 0 /Library/Printers/Xerox/PDEs/pstoxeroxps"

might be written as
*cupsFilter: "application/vnd.cups-postscript 0 ../../PDEs/pstoxeroxps"

Normal CUPS lpr worked fine with that, but some custom print streams did not. The solution was to hand modify the PPDs or to get newer drivers (or older ones for that matter) from Xerox.

I am no tech expert but thanks for this tip. Could not get Quark to export as a pdf. All I had to do was create a new printer, named it 'localhost' (OSX 10.5.2) - system preferences, print & fax, add a printer (+ sign), on the 'print using' pull down menu I assigned it with the first xerox driver in the menu. Then I could export as pdf.

Generally, I would have settled for a cheaper printer for our office use. But a friend told me that he was satisfied with the Phaser 8560 which he got from freeprinterpromo.com so I decided why not give it a try. I have been using this unit for almost a year now and quite frankly, I am also satisfied with its performance. Crisp picture quality prints at lightning speed. Works well with our business print requirements. The only thing I hate is the sound it makes while printing. But it is tolerable, lols.

its cheaper to buy 8560 Xerox Printer outright and then buy ink from www.nicksdeals.com - Ink from NicksDeals.com cuts the cost down over 75% from the "free printer option"
