An AppleScript to autofill iPod shuffles with podcasts iPod
For some reason (perhaps due to worries about file size), the iPod shuffle will not autofill podcasts. As stated in the help menu:
If you have an iPod shuffle, iTunes-enabled mobile phone, or third-party music player, you can only load podcasts onto it manually
This is annoying if you want to automatically update your shuffle with podcasts from, for example, a smart play list. It can be fixed manually by selecting the podcast (or podcasts) and unchecking the Skip when shuffling box in the Options pane of the Get info dialogue box. A better way is to use this short AppleScript, which does this for you. Copy and paste it into Script Editor, then save it in the ~/Library » iTunes » Scripts directory, as you can then run it from the Scripts menu in iTunes.

I have a smart playlist called Latest podcasts, which contains all podcasts downloaded in the previous week. Once the download is complete, run the script and then connect the shuffle. Autofill will now work fine.

Actually, it was linked correctly. It just wasn't uploaded :). Sorry about that; all is better now.

This is a great script which I've been using for a while now to allow iTunes to autofill podcasts to my 2nd gen shuffle. Unforunately since the iTunes 8.1 release it no longer works. iTunes just refuses to autofill podcasts to the shuffle, presumably it no longer just looks for the "skip when shuffling" flag.

If anyone can get podcasts to autofill an iPod shuffle using iTunes 8.1 I'd be very interested to hear how!?

Hopefully we'll see iTunes become more Podcast/Shuffle friendly down the line, but this is a nice hint that will save me a few keystrokes every time I sync my shuffle (which I only use for podcasts).

What I'd like to do is sync a playlist and have it just put the newest items, but still retain them in "oldest to newest" order. ie, if I sync a "last week podcast" playlist with 2GB of items, it would be nice to just have the last of those 2GB. iTunes seems to go by sort order, so if I do this I only get the first 1GB of that list. Ah well, can't have everything... Or can we? Anyone know?
