Charge a USB-based iPod via a powered hub iPod
Since i don't carry the charger around with me, I discovered my iPod mini can be charged by simply connecting it to a powered USB hub (and it will charge as if it was connected to a computer or a charger). It takes more time, but it works.

[robg adds: Or you could use your AirPort Express, or perhaps (at least according to the comments) via USB on (some) sleeping Macs.]

If you're hurting for powered USB ports and just need to charge, any video game console that has one (Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360, Playstation 2 or 3) should work too.

I've found I can charge my Motorola RAZR phone with it's mini-USB port from a powered USB port. Very handy when the battery is low and no charger is around.

If you travel a lot, you might like to know about this Stormlite travel plug that not only allows you to plug just about any power plug into any power socket world-wide, but it also has a USB socket on the top so you can charge your iPod at the same time. Excellent !

Here's a link

Charging via USB hubs usually doesn't work with newer iPod models. It seems that they require the USB port to be "active" for whatever reasons. This can be fixed by modifying a USB cable but this is surely not for the faint hearted.

The Airport Express as a charging station works, though.
