10.4: Be aware of some PowerPC - Intel migration issues

I migrated my user account from my old iMac G4 to my new Intel iMac using the Migration Assistant. I booted up the new machine, but the page loading times in my browser were painfully slow. I tried everything, it seemed, until I checked the Console log and noticed errors with my Safari plug-ins. Then it hit me: maybe those plug-ins were PowerPC only, and were invoking Rosetta repeatedly to run. I removed those plug-ins and voila!, my page loading speed was quicker than ever!

[robg adds: While the Migration Assistant can be a huge timesaver when upgrading machines, I chose to migrate to my Intel Mac without its help. It's not just your browser, of course, that might be impacted. There are plug-ins for Mail, Safari, and many other programs, any of which might be PowerPC only code on your old machine. By checking each app and plug-in that I was moving over, I was able to eliminate or upgrade those that were PowerPC only. Yes, it's much more time consuming to do things this way, but I like knowing everything I've installed on a new machine will work as expected.]
