New iPhone poll posted Site News
Typically, the week after a Macworld Expo, I post a poll asking everyone to pick their favorite new piece of hardware from the keynote. Given that we had but two products this time, and one had but 15 minutes of stage time, I figured a "most interesting product" poll would be sort of meaningless.

Instead, I thought I would ask about your iPhone purchase plans. I've probably left out some reasons for "yes" or "no," but this should give us some idea as to how popular the iPhone will be when it comes out in six months or so -- at least with the macosxhints.com crowd!

speculation on video ichat and java
Authored by: SOX on Jan 15, '07 06:20:00PM

It's interesting to note that in it's current form there is no provision for ichat. Understandable since that undermines cingular. But it's not just a matter of being software disabled. Notice that the video camera is on the back side. the right place for taking pictures but not for ichat video.

Because they have gone out of their way to keep internet telephony off of it I wonder how they will deal with those java phones that run in safari. perhaps there will be no audio input enabled in java? or maybe no java at all?

after all the emphasis seems to be on robust ipod/phone experience not crashing computer instability so one presumes that browser loaded java apps will be unavailable too.

Cingular is a horrible cell phone company..
Authored by: yossie on Jan 19, '07 01:29:41PM

GSM seems nice, but Cingular has never been a good company to work with and shows no signs of improving. I have had to call the PUC on them multiple times for overcharging me as much as $400 and refusing to refund it - in the end, after intervention, they did. Their customer service is surly-polite, if you know what I mean. Getting to a live person is an exercise in patience, the phone menu is practically never ending. So, I will hold off till they have a CDMA version that works with Verizon - and, no I am not a giant fan of Verizon, but compared to Cingular, there is no contest.
On a different note, if in fact Safari on the iPhone *IS* Safari (did Steve "mislead us" when he said it was the same Safari as on Desktops?), then you have an application platform built in - Safari supports a plenty rich DHTML/AJAX model that allows for Widgets and other web based apps. Think "Web2.0" and the iPhone makes a lot more sense as an edge-unit in that arena.
