10.4: iStat nano - A system information widget Pick of the Week
The macosxhints Rating:

[Score: 9 out of 10]
While putting together my presentations for Macworld Expo last week, I needed a few widgets to help demonstrate a particular tip. So I headed over to Apple's widget page and just grabbed a few at random. One of the ones I grabbed was iStat nano, which has turned out to be a most useful widget.

iStat nano is a small system information widget that provides lots of details on what's going on with your machine: CPU and memory usage, remaining disk space, network activity, top CPU using processes, uptime, system temperatures, battery status, and fan activity. (You have to approve the installation of a small extension to track fan and temperature information on Intel machines.)

My only complaint is that, with my aging -- though still 20/20 -- eyes, I wish the widget were just a bit bigger. While I don't have to squint to read it, if the widget and its text were just a bit larger, everything would be easier to read. Other than that, though, iStat nano works well, and provides a lot of useful information in an easy-to-use package.

I have both iStat nano and iStat pro widgets. I used them for a while, but them started to feel like they slowed things down. Could you please keep us posted with your experiences? In regard to a hint a few weeks ago, in which someone suggested emptying the Dashboard cache, I'm trying to preemptively keep it small.

Thanks, rob n

Hi Rob

I've been running iStat Nano for a good year now and haven't noticed any slowdown. My only gripe is the nag to download every time they release a new version, which is often. I imagine this is why it's the most downloaded widget...

robogobo :

I have an iBook G4 (1.2ghz & 768 MB Ram), I have been using iStat Pro (I prefer it over nano b/c I use it to quick glance at as I'm working throughout the day to figure out if something is hanging, or to check HD space without having to leave my current program (with only a 30 gb hd, that only has a few 100mb free.. I have to check this frequently), and many more uses I have for it throughout the day. In my use of iStat, I've been a user since the early versions, I have not experienced any lag.

To give you an idea, I have the weather, time, calendar, iCal events, address book and iStat Pro widgets running at all times. Software wise I always have Safari (several windows), Firefox, Dreamweaver and iTunes running constantly. Occasionally I fire up an Adobe program to tweak a file.

Thus far I haven't experienced lag. The only bottlenecks I have are my hardware, the cpu, ram and of course nearly full hard drive. The widgets themselves, if I turn them all off I don't see any increase in speed.

i might have rambled a bit, but I hope I gave you an answer that helps :)

If you're an Amnesty user, setting the widget zoom to 125% or 150% can help in this regard.

Maybe you could hack it easily. Take a look; only you can decide if you're up to the task.

I managed to hack pearLyrics and Sing That iTune! to show me a bigger font. Because the widgets are resizable and the lyrics text flows to fit the space, it was a simple change.

That might not be true with the iStat widget, but heck, take a look. There may be obvious settings for the window size as well as font sizes.

BTW, one of the many things that made me switch to Mac was the ease with which I can resize the text I'm reading on the screen. In browsers, TextEdit, and Mail, I often make text much larger just to make things easier on my eyes. I am peering at a computer monitor at least 12 hours a day, and after 15 years of this, I am really appreciating the text-enlarging ease of a Mac... and really hating, and avoiding, web sites that become a mess when I enlarge the text.
