One of the comments to Trigger backups on connect with launchd hint pointed to a simpler way: Do Something When, a preference pane that accomplishes the same thing as the launchd scripts. When I posted about this, a commenter also referred me to an Apple-published Folder Action to do the same job.
So now there's no excuse not to back up. Be carefulm, though: if your trigger starts a clone automatically when your backup drive is connected, chances are someday you'll hook up the drive to recover a file, and end up overwriting what you intended to restore!
