I managed to end up with a lot of calendars in iCal which I thought were empty, but I wasn't sure. I happened to stumble across quick way to test whether or not they truly were empty.
Select the calendar in the Calendars pane, then press the Delete key. If the calendar is empty, it will be deleted with no confirmation. If there is anything in the calendar, iCal will warn you before deleting it.
Clearly this is a 'use at your own risk' tip (you do have working backups, right?), but it worked well for me.
