Forward email to a phone in Mail.app Apps
Smart phones and their associated data services can be costly, especially if you choose to receive all your email on your phone. So here's a cheap way to get some email on your phone via Mail.app
  1. Discover your cell phone's email address equivalent. For instance, 1234567890@mycingular.net.
  2. In Mail.app -> Preferences, create a rule that dictates what sorts of messages you'd like forwarded -- such as members of an Address Book group, or a high priority message, etc.
  3. Set the Rule to 'Forward Message' to your cell phone's email address equivalent.
  4. Make the Rule active whenever you are away from your computer.
You carrier's data charges may apply, but could be worth it when you get that important message in time.

This hint should absolutely NOT be applied before checking with your carrier. In the US, messages over the email gateway are charged as SMS messages (by most carriers -- I have personal experience with Cingular, Sprint, and T-Mobile), so even if you have an unlimited data plan you may still be hit with excess charges with this method.

I set up an email forwarding mechanism during my last trip (on my mail server, not in Mail.app), and specifically bumped up my monthly SMS usage to handle the load. Otherwise, you're looking at $0.10 an email.

If you really want push email over an unlimited data connection, try an IM client, which can be fed announcements via AppleScript.

Do tell, how does one do the email IM trick? Always open to the cheaper option!

Thanks,

This just in from Cingular:

"When you forward e-mail to your phone, it will be billed as a text message. If you do not have a package messages are $.15 each as of January 15. The message length includes the return e-mail address, subject line, and body of the e-mail. Messages which exceed 160 characters will be split and delivered as multiple messages and charged accordingly. Only text will be delivered. Attachments are not supported and will not be delivered."

I might tighten the specifications in my Mail.app rule, but this is still a viable solution for me!

David
