10.4: View selection dimensions in Preview System 10.4
In Preview, if you hold down the Option key before dragging across a rectangle in an image to create a selection, the dimensions of your selection appear in a translucent bubble as you drag. You can also hold the same keys down before dragging a handle of the selection box.

Note that you must hold down the key before you click the mouse button; you can't do so in mid-drag.

Thanks. Also works for me if I just use the Option key.

Same here [using 10.4.8 on a PPC G5].

Nice hint! I hope I remember it. It could save a step or two now & then.

Very good to know! Now if it would support holding space to move the selection box around while making the selection, like Photoshop does...

yes just the option key. if you forget to hold the key down before dragging, just let go and hold and drag an existing rectangle and the coordinates return. Handy tool to know about.

OH, that's a nice addition, too. Good to know for those times when the box looks perfect but I forgot to hold Option to get the dimensions.

Oh, darn. When I test this on a JPG, I find that just dragging the box around, and holding Option, doesn't add the dimensions display. Only *resizing* the box seems to do let me add the Option key. All this is assuming, of course, that I dragged a selection box before thinking about holding down Option.

Good tip. As noted you only need to hold the option ket to get this to work.
If you have already made a selection you can resize the selection whilst holding the option key and get the same effect.
It doesn't appear to work for PDF files though . . .

What are the units of the dimension displayed? e.g., 427, 200

Whoops! Sorry about the extra Command, if someone could correct the hint, I'd appreciate it. (For some reason I only tried Command by itself, not Option by itself, when I was experimenting. Not sure why...)

On a .png
Pressing Option does do dimensions (x,y in pixels). Not in a .pdf.
Option-shift does a rectangle selection. Not in a .pdf
Dragging the selection-box around just plain works, talking pictures.
And then there's the stuff you can choose in the "Tools menu".
Looking at the Preview Help, it came to mind that it would be a good idea to actually read it... ;-)

Minor correction: Option-shift dragging creates a *square* selection box.
