Quickly copy iCal event information into other files Apps
As a member of several organizations, I'm constantly emailing updates on upcoming meetings and events. I use iCal religiously to keep track of everything, but it gets tedious having to retype all the details into an email.

Today I noticed that dragging an individual event off the iCal screen changes its appearance -- and sure enough, when I dropped the dragged event onto an email in Mail, it entered all the information perfectly. Hitting copy and paste works just as well, and any text field can use it.

Dragging doesn't work with all event types
Authored by: lullabud on Dec 19, '06 10:28:12AM

I just tried it with an invite I had recieved from somebody who scheduled it with Outlook and FreeBusy. When I began dragging the event a window popped up alerting me that I had been invited to the event and wasn't allowed to change it. This window interfered with me dragging it off onto an e-mail. I also tried this with an item from the birthday calendar from Address Book and got a similar window saying it was a read-only calendar.

Copying and pasting worked in both instances though (with a little weirdness with the birthday calendar), so that might be the better way to go about this.

This also works with multiple events -- now, if only the clipboard would convert this to tab-delimited values. :)

With iCal 2.0.5, I can't make it work with multiple events. How do you proceed?

The process is a little convoluted... here's what I do:

I make sure only the calendar I want to copy is checked in the Calendars pane at the left.
I click on the List button (3rd from the right at the bottom right of the main window). This brings up a list of all events in the calendar.
I select one or more events, Copy, and voilĂ : one or more events have been copied to the clipboard.

One caveat with this is that sometimes the events run together; that is, the summary of one event will appear immediately after the description of the previous event.

Also, for some strange reason events do not copy in the same order as they are listed in iCal.

Other than that, this is my #1 method of tallying hours for my clients -- until I master an AppleScript that will do this for me. :)
