Looking for poll ideas... Site News
It's basically been two months since I posted a new poll ... and after 150+ polls over the years, I'm in need of some fresh ideas (we're due for another Browser Wars soon, but that's hardly a fresh idea). So I'm asking the community for some creative help -- please use the comments to this post to suggest topics you think other OS X users might find interesting to vote on and discuss.

Keep in mind that polling here is quite basic -- the questions must be multiple choice only, and to keep things manageable, the number of responses needs to be somewhat limited. Please browse the list of existing polls before submitting a suggestion, as we may have already posted an identical or similar poll. Topics are typically related to Macs, OS X, iPods, or computing in general.

No guarantees your poll question will be used, of course, and the only claim to fame I can offer is that you'll be recognized as the contributor of the question when the poll goes live.

Thanks!
-rob.

Looking for poll ideas...
Authored by: poenn on Nov 16, '06 04:21:36AM

Hi Rob,

of course one could change the options and/or the question a little bit, but that's what I'd be interested in:

What's your occupation in the "Macworld"?

-home/private user
-administrator of a company/school
-selfemployed supporter
-employee in creative job

Thanks
poenn

Which Zune-only feature would you most like to see added to the iPod? (Built-in Radio, Wi-Fi song sharing, "landscape" display, WMV support, brown color, Vista incompatibility...)

If Apple continues to use feline names for new versions of OS X, what should it call the successor to Leopard? (Lion, Lynx, Ocelot, Garfield...)

Switchers only: Which OS X convention was hardest to get used to? (Using Command key instead of CTRL for keyboard shortcuts, Apple mouse, left-corner window-resizing buttons, Expos, Spotlight search, Trash instead of Recycling...)

Actor Justin Long has refuted recent rumors that he's being replaced as Apple's "I'm a Mac" spokesperson, but if he were to go, which other "J.L." should replace him? (Jason Lee, J-Lo, John Lennon, Jane Lynch, Justus League...)

What's the best song used in an iPod ad?

What's the best new feature of the latest 5G iPods? (Search, CD-quality audio recording, longer battery life, new earbuds, brighter display)

use other "advanced" technologies
Authored by: LouieNet on Nov 16, '06 04:44:01AM
Assuming that a reader can't choose more than one answer....

How many of the following is true for you?

  • Drive a car that is not solely powered by gasoline. (Gas/electric hybrids count even if the electric power is derived from the gas engine.)
  • Own a PVR (TiVo, Replay, MythTV, etc.)
  • Power the home, in part or in whole, with a renewable energy source (solar, wind, buy from a "green" source, etc.)
  • Live in a "smart home".
( ) all 4
( ) 3
( ) 2
( ) 1
( ) none

I'm sure I didn't list many other "advanced" technologies that Mac owners would use.

Where do you do most of your writing:

  • TextEdit
  • BBEdit/TextWrangler
  • Pages
  • Word
  • Mariner Write
  • Emacs
  • Vim
  • OpenOffice.org/NeoOffice
  • Other

Note: this isn't "What's the best text editor?" or "What's the best word processor?" it's "Where do YOU do most of your writing?" Because I do most of mine in BBEdit even though I often paste it into Word.

Is there a way to let them be able to write in their "Other" choice?

Haha. This is what I thought of too. But I would change it to be: "editor wars #1" (similar to the browser wars polls), and then:

* TextEdit
* TextEdit + TextExtras
* Xcode
* BBEdit
* TextWrangler
* SubEthaEdit
* TextMate
* Smultron
* Emacs
* Vim
* Other mac editor
* Other terminal editor

How do you RSS?

There was one a long time ago but it would be interesting in the other way;
- Safari or other normal browser (options)
- RSS application (options ... including Sherlock)
- website (bloglines etc, options)
- I don't use RSS feature

So actually, how big % of Mac users use or don't use the RSS at all, and how do they use it?

Simpler than the similar suggestion already posted, but you could add an "I'd never allow that OS on my Mac" choice [grin].

I don't see the point in Finder tabs. It's not like web pages where I want to load stuff up now to look at later. My top Finder request is multi-threading.

remap keys

<b>Did you remap cmd/ctrl/capslock keys to something else?</b> I wonder how many users kill caps lock, how many switchers stay loyal to control key shortcuts.

This is similar to a previous poll, but a lot has changed since then so:

Which classical MacOS standard feature is still most conspicuously absent in OS X?

AFP - easy sharing of arbitrary folders
"Button" view (single click access configurable on a per-folder basis)
"Empty Trash" dialogue more informative (total size, number of items)
Keyboard shortcuts customizable for app launching
Labels - less gaudy; customizable colours
"Put Away"
"Print Window"
"Open" button when folder selected in "Save" dialogues
"Stationery" that doesn't immediately create a copy in original's folder
"Up one level" function button in dialogues.
Windows "draggable" by any edge as consistent standard
Window shade
Other...

How about this?

How long till Apple licences out OSX to run on generic Intel PC's?

100 million unhappy, virus-infected PC users might want to know... :-)

At around (hypothetically) $300.xx bunded with an OEM copy of Win.XP,
that'd be THIRTY BILLION DOLLARS of instant cash-revenue to Apple
---the stockholders will say this is a WONDERFUL idea, financially....

Strategically...
---How long until Apple licenses OSX out to run natively on generic Intel hardware?:
• At Macworld 2007
• Coincident with official release of "Leopard"
• Ahead of release of Windows "Vista"
• Coincident with release of "Vista"
• One Year
• Two Years
• Three Years
• Maybe Someday
• Never

Hardware Implications, if Apple licenses OSX onto generic PC's:
• No impact on Apple hardware--we have the design/quality people want
• Apple goes "upscale"--a "Rolls Royce" build-to-order rich option...
• Apple stops development of CPU hardware and focuses on "rich media" for "home theatre" set-top environments.

*sigh*
Authored by: lionel77 on Nov 16, '06 05:56:06PM

I can't believe people still have the nerve to suggest this. I don't think there is a single Mac related web page where the "Apple would be so much more successful if they sold OS X for generic PCs" myth has not been debunked.

The two main reasons why this is A Bad Idea™ are:
- hugely increased development and testing costs for supporting a shitload of hardware configurations (some of very low quality)
- Apple would lose more profit in hardware sales than they would make through the additional OS licenses (even if the mac market share would tripple or so)
