This morning, I added a To Do item to iCal, then thought perhaps it should be an Event instead. Without really thinking about it, I dragged the entry out of the To Do panel and onto the calendar. Presto, instant new event! Any notes or alarms associated with the To Do will also transfer. When you do this, you'll actually create a copy of your To Do, as the original item is left in place.
You can go the other direction, too -- drag an Event into the To Do panel to create a To Do entry based on the event's particulars. Again, this action creates a copy, leaving the original event untouched.
This might be common sense to many of you, but in all my time with iCal, I had never thought to try it (and it's not documented in the Help, at least not that I can find after some digging).
