Use .Mac and Mail to send from non-.Mac addresses Apps
I have three Macs checking the same email accounts, and as such, love the IMAP system -- never read a message twice, flags stay flagged, junk stay deleted, etc. However, I have been using a dead POP3 account just to send emails from my personal domain. I was getting fed up with this, so I tried to use commas to make more "send from" addresses for the .Mac account in Mail's preferences. For some reason, it only worked for a little while (like minutes). Note that emails have to be sent from a non-.Mac SMTP address -- here in the UK, my mail is sent through my broadband provider just fine, and retains my personal domain address.

So here's the hint. I simply set the IMAP account manually in the new account pane, using the mail.mac.com for incoming mail with the usual username and password. Now I can choose what address the email is sent from. This has worked great for a few days now, and so I thought I would share. So far, I have found no side effects or problems; if you know or think of any, let me know.

We need a trick for .Mac webmail too

This is a great trick - one that I have used for about a year. I actually use a fastmail SMTP server to send my e-mails. It is rock solid and cheap.

I just wish that we could find a similar trick for .Mac webmail. I would like to send e-mails from the webmail interface as if they came from my own domain. Apple simply won't let it happen. They do not even allow the inclusion of a "Reply-To" address. I cannot imagine how to come by a work around. But if anyone knows, please share.

I killed my .Mac account and switched my personal e-mail back to Fastmail because of this one issue. Apple is really stuck in the dark ages on this one--even Gmail now lets you change the "From" address. It's a shame--I really like the sync features of .Mac, but they're not worth $100 a year if I can't use the mail functions.

This is not a defense of Apple's .Mac, but I do understand their desire to make the .Mac a brand, and thereby making every user's email address an advertisement. Hey, it's a great deal for them, you pay $100/year to advertise them.
