10.4: Find duplicate files using Spotlight and a droplet Apps
As requested by a commenter to this hint, I've converted the bash script there into a droplet. Drop a file on it, and it will use your Spotlight index to see if you have a potential duplicate somewhere on your system. Download the free DupeCheck droplet, unzip it, and find a good spot to put it. Drag and drop any file onto it, and it will use Spotlight to identify possible duplicates.

Thanks again to the bash gurus on macosxhints.com who vastly improved my original script (full history and credits available in the original hint and its associated comments, linked above).

[robg adds: This works quite well, and makes the Unix script solution from the original hint usable by everyone -- no Terminal knowledge is required. I have also mirrored the droplet on macosxhints.com, but you should grab the original if possible, as it likely will be newer than the mirrored copy.]

Find duplicate files without specifying one in particular

What technique or application do you recommend for simply finding all duplicate files among all files on one and/or across multiple drives?

It seems that it does not work with folders and, therefore, bundles (like app's).
It would be cool if it could also find files with similar names or, at least, that contains the initial file name. For example, if I drag and drop a file named "Picture01.jpg" it would also list "Picture010.jpg", "MyPicture01.jpg".
Thanks for making it free. Kudos. =)

Is there a way to have this run through my Documents folder systematically to check for arbitrary duplicate pairs?

To find all duplicate pairs, I've found only two solutions that work on OS X and neither is particularly slick.

There's an app called zsDuplicateHunter Pro. It's ugly, but it works.

There's also unix black magic, desribed here:

To find all duplicate files try dupeGuru:

http://www.hardcoded.net/dupeguru/

It can scan either filenames or contents.

I have just tried the unix script suggested on the Finnish site, linked to in the post before, but I just got an awfull lot of errors telling me, that my version of the used programs doesn't accept the same options as his version did:

find: illegal option -- t
find: illegal option -- y
find: illegal option -- p
find: illegal option -- e
find: f: No such file or directory
sort: unrecognized option `--'
Try `sort --help' for more information.
uniq: illegal option -- w
usage: uniq [-c | -du] [-f fields] [-s chars] [input [output]]
sed: illegal option -- r
usage: sed script [-Ean] [-i extension] [file ...]
       sed [-an] [-i extension] [-e script] ... [-f script_file] ... [file ...]
So does anybody here know what to do? /Sebastian

I would love to find an app that would find files with the same name size and let me clean out my HD. One technique I found was doing searches for documents by size. Because the files are listed alphabetically. Duplicate files show up next to each other. I will start with big ones, say everything over 25 MB, then 10 MB and so on.

Hope that helps.

I just came across a free open source Java application to help you find and remove duplicate files. It's a little 'raw' but it might do what you need and the price is right!

http://dfr.sourceforge.net/

It just seems wrong to me somehow that I should have to pay to get such a simple piece of functionality.
