Select folder in Open and Save dialogs by dragging Finder proxy icon Apps
When working in Open or Save dialogs, if you have the folder you want to access open in the Finder, you can drag the proxy icon (the icon in a Finder window title bar) to the dialog to immediately switch to that folder. This is a real time saver if your folder is on a long network tree.

[kirkmc adds: There was a hint back in 2001 that explained how you can drag actual folders to these dialogs, but it didn't mention that you can drag proxy icons as well.]

This is also something easy to do with Quicksilver.

"Real" Finder Items and Proxy Items do always behave exactly the same when it comes down to drag and drop, don`t they?

Proxy icons are just an "alias" to the file that the window is displaying, and they should work throughout the system in the same way that dragging a file does. Nothing new here. OS9 or earlier feature.

You can combine this with Unsanity's "Window Shade X" "hakie", which allows you to minimize the window to a strip (which happens to include the icon). Keep your often used folders as a set of strips not much wider then the name and drag the icon to file dialogs as needed.

Unfortunately, not yet officially available for Intel Macs.

Combine this hint with the <Command> <Shift> G keys in any open / save pane and you can drill down through Application packages (or anything that you usually <control> click to see package contents)

You can also drag the results to any other program - like the terminal.

Using a Prefpane called DefaultFolder you can click an open finder window while in a open/save dialog box to load that folders contents.
