Bluetooth modem setup for Nokia E60/61/62/70 GRPS with T-mobile Phones
Setting up a Bluetooth modem connection for the Nokia E60/61/62 or E70 is quite easy with T-mobile. You don't need to download anything extra.

Note that if you are planning on buying the E62 for T-mobile use, don't. It's almost the same as the E61, but it's been changed so UTMS will only work on Cingular's network, and you won't be able to use UTMS when TMO rolls it out.

Onto the goodies:
  1. Add the phone from the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences
  2. Configure the phone to dial a modem, NOT a GPRS provider
  3. The default Nokia Infrared script works fine.
  4. For the access number, enter *99***1#
  5. Go to Internet Connect under the Bluetooth tab and press Connect.
You should also note that you will probably have to purchase the unlimited internet access for this to work.

This is the same advice that Nokia UK tech support give out for using any Nokia as a modem on Mac OS X, so it's in no way unique to T-Mobile.

Oh, and if you're thinking of buying an E62 and don't - don't buy an E61 either if you're not living in Europe. A European handset only has a valid warranty in Europe, Nokia USA won't help you because it's not a US model, and Nokia UK won't talk to you because you're not a UK resident. If anything goes wrong (including botched software updates from the downloadable SW updater), you're pretty much shafted. I've heard that Amazon.com are selling E61s in the US - don't assume this means that it has a valid Nokia warranty or that you can get product support from Nokia. It doesn't, and you can't.

Just a word of warning, since I've seen more people than I can count fall into this trap.

Just to try it out I signed up for a $7.95 a month dial-up plan. I linked my Motorola RAZR using the T-Mobile network and found a generic modem script for Motorola in the Apple discussion forums. I got everything working and had a whopping 10kbs download speed. The system profiler says the bluetooth module in my mac is 11mbs and needless to say this wasn't even getting close. I talked with a few of my cell phone buddies that work for Cingular in this case and they all made the point that the cell phone companies they work with put the slowest bluetooth module in their phones. Is it because they are trying to stop dial via bluetooth, who knows. The bottom line I enjoyed my $7.95 dial-up account 1 whole day. Slooooooooooow!

Hi,

maybe this helps: check the page of Ross Barkman at http://www.taniwha.org.uk/, as well as his page on access parameters for a vast number of networks at http://www.taniwha.org.uk/gprs.html. I succeeded using the Nokia scripts to connect to GSM as well as 3G networks using Bluetooth and GPRS. Esp. 3G is nice, because you can actually use the phone to talk to someone while surfing the net! My setup is PowerBook G4 and Nokia E60 using Tiger 10.4.8.

Good luck.

Thomas

I have ppp echo, and tcp header compression both off

On your phone, go to Tools -> Settings -> Connection. Then, click on "Packet Data". Type in "wap.voicestream.com" in the Access Point field.

Now you should be able to Authenticate. Leave Account and password blank on the mac.
