10.4: Quickly exit from Front Row System 10.4
If you are using Front Row and you want to quickly return to your desktop, without hitting Menu multiple times on the remote, simply press Command-Tab as if you were switching applications.

[robg adds: This isn't mentioned anywhere in Front Row's help, so I'd never thought to try it. Unfortunately, when you press Command-Tab, you aren't immediately switched back to your Desktop. Instead, Front Row navigates back up out of whichever screen you were in to the main menu, then closes that, complete with all the usual animations. (Command-Q does exactly the same thing.) If someone knows a real "quit Front Row *now*" shortcut, please share!]

Just use the traditional "Force Quit" buttons:

Apple-Option-Escape

I noticed this the first time I ran Front Row by accident - it doesn't even bring up the force quit dialogue, it just quits it. Real fast.

If you just press any alphanumeric key (ie A-Z or 1-9) on the keyboard, Front Row will exit and return directly to the desktop.

Command option escape will exit frontrow without any animation or bringing up the force quit applications dialog.... Maybe that's what you're looking for?

Pressing any random key (letters, punctuation, digits, Fx) will do the exact same thing.

Yep, what Jeff said. Just press any letter on the keyboard.

the difference is that using Cmd-Option-Esc exits Front Row immediately. Before you even let go of the keys, you're back at your desktop. Using any alphanumeric key forces it to go through an animation or two as it exits out. So OziMac's hint is the real deal "instant" front row exit shortcut.

Here is one more, better one - hit the "HOME" button on the keyboard. It will take you right back to your desktop.

No, this is exactly the same as pushing any random letter on the keyboard. Try it.

I setup FrontRow to activate using the F13 key. This give me a one button activation and exit. It still goes through the animations, but you dont have to hit three keys.

I use cmd-optn-esc to force quit Front Row when it freezes. So far, no other key combo does this. (Front row freezes often on my new 24" iMac.)

I tried all of these options, and really only Apple + Option + Escape gets you out instantly without any fuss/wait.

Force-quittting applications isn't something you want to do all the time. Oh well, at least we're on OS X and not 9.

I tested, and find CMD-OPT-Esc instantly exits Front Row, whereas the other tips do not.

BTW, if your reason for instantly killing FR is that the boss/spouse/kids/teacher just came into the room, whack the Esc key one more time to get rid of the Force Quit dialog box. Actually, this isn't reliable -- a few times I tried, the Force Quit box wasn't "up front" and "in focus" when FR vanished, so the Esc key didn't get rid of it .... so maybe you'd be better off not counting on this hint to help you get away with doing something you shouldn't be doing. ;) I think the FQ dialog was not in focus when I was viewing a "video podcast" rather than a "movie". I see iTunes is still running in the background...

Also note:

- if you're using Front Row to play songs in iTunes, killing Front Row won't stop the music. iTunes is running in the background, playing the music.

- if you're using FR to view photos in iPhoto, CMD-OPT-Esc won't stop the slideshow or the music playing with it. Apparently iPhoto boots and runs the show, and the Force Quit dialog shows it listed. I don't see an instant way to quit a slideshow.

- I didn't test with a DVD in the slot. I leave that to someone else.
